Yeah, so i went back to honduras. dug trench, mixed concrete, moved rocks, played football, ate tipico (rice, beans, chicken, avocado, etc.), drank cerveza, saw the ruins, met a bunch of nice locals and expats. it's too long a story to tell, but suffice it to say that i love honduras and will definitely be going back sooner than later. more photos. Also, i'm a graduate student! So that's what's up. also, lots of bike riding, yadda yadda. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Created with flickr badge. Life in Mali...

on dougly matters: the passion of Pfc. Bradley Manning
http://ondouglymatters.blogspot.com/2011/12/passion-of-pfc-bradley-manning.html
The passion of Pfc. Bradley Manning. In the New York Times about Pfc. Bradley Manning's hearing in the wikileaks case. I'm NOT saying that doing what he is accused of was right or legal, but:. A) has anyone questioned the wisdom of giving access to such a large cache of sensitive classified documents to 21 year old Pfcs? Is this necessary for the smooth operation of our military? Young, stupid, and too much responsibility probably isn't a valid legal defense, but isn't that the case here? Qualifications:...

Currency derives its value from convenience. I've finally stumbled across a simple, defensible answer to the question of why is money necessary, and i had to come up with it myself. i don't fully believe the answer yet, but it's the best i've seen. If a material cannot provide or conserve chemical energy (food, tools, clothing), protect us from environmental factors (shelter), or aid in successful reproduction (alcohol, medicine), it is extraneous. Some things to do before her arrival:. Eat lots of delic...

Reflection and quieting the overmind. Besides mountain biking, my favorite kind of riding as of late has been short road rides with my singlespeed cyclocross bike, fat slick tires, camera strapped to my belt, and Strava. Running on my phone to collect location data. The point of all this is that riding bicycles can be both a means to a destination and an end in itself. It is how I practice something approximating meditation. It allows the waking, problem-solving 'overmind' to quiet and allows the...Trave...

on dougly matters: ramblings on the origins of religion
http://ondouglymatters.blogspot.com/2013/09/so-im-committed-atheistic-humanist-have.html
Ramblings on the origins of religion. So I'm a committed atheistic humanist, have been for 8 years. But in the last year I've lost my taste for strict scientific materialism and begun to acknowledge, ponder, and embrace'mystery' and it's many meanings. Terrence McKenna pointed out that scientific materialists of 200 years ago would have scoffed at the idea of electromagnetic fields as alchemical magick mumbo jumbo. Then I watched The Road. It's important to point out that many ancient religions had a psy...

Observation: Mohammed V Airport, Casablanca, Mar 30, 11:33 GMT. White guy with big red beard in fancy puma 'Italia' tracksuit. Wife (I think) in full burqa and nijab, gloves, only eyes showing. It's not my culture, but how can this be justified? In what way is justice provided for the woman? It's possible she dresses this way voluntarily, but how much does cultural (read: religious) influence weigh in? Though relatively progressive and tolerant, isn't really a free society. In fact it's a constitutio...
