At the Bee Farm: May 2010
http://chicagohoneycoop.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 22, 2010. Every year around this time we start to get emails from people who have a swarm of honey bees in their yard or on their fence or in a tree. In the past they may have just called an exterminator. Now, because of the publicity about Colony Collapse Disorder, they want to avoid killing the bees and just want to find them a new home. Admittedly, a swarm of flying bees is pretty scary looking but you could stand in the middle of one as I have and not get stung unless you started swatti...

Sunday, February 6, 2011. Essential Equipment for Starting a Beehive Part One. Hives with all medium boxes. Top cover is raised for extra ventilation. This is the time of year when beekeepers order new equipment and supplies for the coming beekeeping season. If you are just starting beekeeping this year the numbers and variety of equipment available can get pretty confusing. So here is a list of basics and why you will need them. Hive boxes (also called supers):. Top Cover and Inner Cover:. We are an urb...

Monday, December 5, 2011. Goodbye to Fillmore Apiary. In 2004 when we started our co-op, we had no idea how long we might be allowed to keep bees on the property along West Fillmore St in Chicago, perhaps 2 or 3 years at best. It has been our great pleasure to have had an apiary and community farm there for 8 full years. When we started, we couldn’t have have imagined what a rich experience it would be. Beekeeping Class June 2011. Sadly, our time there is almost up. The property has been sold and we ...

Thursday, May 19, 2011. 5 Queens delivered from Southern Illinois today. Priority small flat rate boxes are perfect for this. The black cap on the end of the queen cage holds sugar candy for the bees to eat. The Queen is on the right. She is marked with a white dot and shipped with four attendants who take care of her during the trip. The dot will make it a little easier to find her inside the hive. Live bees attract attention. Sunday, March 21, 2010. Why We are starting a CSA. We think this approach will work much better for both us and our customers. A share will cost $48.00 and can be used at either the 2 farmers markets we will be selling at this year. In addition CSA members will be able to choose from other products from the bee farm that we usually don't sell at the markets and will get discounted admission to events and tours we have at the apiary. So, here we go! Hope to see you all at market! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Chicago Tomato Fest: May 2009
http://chicagotomatofest.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 30, 2009. Remaining Plants for Sale - 2009. I just received a count of the remaining plants for sale at our June 5th event. Please note that these are rough and conservatively low counts for each, so I hope we have a touch more than advertised. If you'd like to buy a particular variety, please remember that the sales are first come, first serve, so please arrive early. Not sure which variety is for you? Black Brandywine - 16. Slightly under-ripe here, but it was the end of the season).

Wednesday, April 13, 2011. Winner, Winner, Bacon Dinner! As a Rockstar community garden, I find my self showered with affection, praise, and the occasional extra ticket or two to the premier events in Chicagoland. Tuesday, August 24, 2010. How to seduce a renowned food writer (and why your neighbor might be more important). I scream, you scream, we all scream for the attention of a few national figures who drive forward the cause of good food. Well, screaming might not be what we do, more like try to share the passion we have for our small local projects with people who might in turn promote the efforts of our collaborators and friends. In our case, we hope you might have read our " Open Letter to Ruth Reichl.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009. Michael Nagrant on Winter Tomatoes. I was encouraged to see criticism of the use of fresh tomatoes in December by Michael Nagrant over on New City. Just as I feel like we should celebrate those who go out of their way to serve and support local farms in the summer, I am pleased to see that critics are tuned into misplaced tomatoes in the winter.
