Chickpeas Café: February 2013

http://chickpeascafe.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

A collection of musings on food and nutrition and occasionally, other things that interest me. Saturday, February 23, 2013. Sauteed Kale with Balsamic. So here I go, attempting to embrace what I have in this time and place. Five great things about winter, in no particular order:. Soup It's just not as enjoyable in warm seasons. The Somerville winter farmers market. They have cider donuts if you get there early enough. There's also a musician playing fun cover tunes. Birdie prints on my porch. 2 Add kale ...

Chickpeas Café: March 2012

http://chickpeascafe.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

A collection of musings on food and nutrition and occasionally, other things that interest me. Thursday, March 1, 2012. I just partook in one my my favorite simple pleasures in life - eating toast with butter and jam (or in this case, toast with Earth Balance and jam). It was comforting and satisfying on this cold winter's night. But, now, I have to partake in the unpleasant part. I have to go get my iPhone, open the My Net Diary app, and log my calories. A little backstory. 1 small onion chopped. Subscr...

Chickpeas Café: February 2014

http://chickpeascafe.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

A collection of musings on food and nutrition and occasionally, other things that interest me. Wednesday, February 5, 2014. Each year at Christmas, I find myself both delighted by people's generosity in gift-giving and overwhelmed by the sheer amount of "stuff"that comes in and out of my house. Living in a fairly small apartment, it's always a challenge to find space for new things. This year, I was motivated to purge post-Christmas for various reasons. How important is it? Green Almond Butter Smoothie.

Chickpeas Café: January 2014

http://chickpeascafe.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

A collection of musings on food and nutrition and occasionally, other things that interest me. Saturday, January 25, 2014. I do hope our momentum of both books and building friendships continues into 2014. The next book we will discuss is Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain. I saw her Ted Talk and liked what she had to say, and have been wanting to read the book. We are also pairing our next meeting with a clothing swap. 1 package of firm tofu. Watermark templa...

Chickpeas Café: July 2012

http://chickpeascafe.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

A collection of musings on food and nutrition and occasionally, other things that interest me. Saturday, July 21, 2012. When was the last time you had someone over for a cup of tea? Asked a friend or neighbor to take a pause in their day and come by for a short visit to sit down at the kitchen table and chat for a bit over a mug of English Breakfast? Yeah, I can't remember either. Never? Has meeting up at Starbucks for a latte become the modern-day version of this simple social gesture? The juice from 1 ...

Velokat: Road to Recovery

http://velokat.blogspot.com/2010/04/road-to-recovery.html

Friday, April 16, 2010. If you read this blog, you may have noticed that I haven't posted about cycling since November. This is because I have been off the bike since then, sidelined by a herniated disc between the L5 and S1 vertebrae. I'm posting today, because yesterday was my first day on a "real" bike since October 31st. I rode my winter road bike to and from work yesterday and it felt just wonderful! I have been riding my upright commuter bike (to commute) a few times a week for the last couple of w...

Velokat: May 2009

http://velokat.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 18, 2009. Apparently my back wheel is some kind of magnet that draws other bicycles into it. Or perhaps it's a vortex, I'm not sure. What I do know is that in three weeks, I've done three races, been involved in three incidents, and had three wheel repairs. There was a lot of nervousness: the pace was fast, then slow; people were moving around a lot, and then randomly you'd hear "slowing, slowing"! At one point my teammate Katherine S. got a gap on everyone else, but she got reeled back in.

Velokat: April 2009

Wednesday, April 15, 2009. We are CYCLISTS, not BIKERS. Bikers wear black leather and chains, ride Harleys, drink beer, and engage in bar fights. Cyclists wear brightly colored Lycra and spandex, ride Cannondales, drink Accelerade, and shave their legs. Get it right, people! Sunday, April 5, 2009. Saturday, April 4, 2009. Springtime in the Desert (Tucson Trip). On Monday I reassembled my bike, then cut my hand open and spent a couple of hours in urgent care (see last post). :-(. Without Catherine joining...

Friday, July 31, 2009. Memorial Day Weekend in Vermont. Nearly every Memorial Day weekend for the past couple of years, several of our cycling friends have gone up to Stowe, VT. Most of us go for the cycling, but some go running, shopping and occasionally, canoeing and wine tasting. Once again we stayed at Ye Olde England Inne. Where they feed us wonderful big breakfasts to keep the energy up while on the bike. Saturday was also Todd's 40th birthday. We celebrated with a surprise ice cream cake. Ok, folk...

Velokat: December 2009

http://velokat.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Saturday, December 12, 2009. South Beach, Miami. At the beginning of December, I spent a few days in South Beach with my friend Catherine. I had never been to Miami before and it was a fun trip. We flew down on a Wednesday morning and I came home Friday night. We stayed at the Sagamore. We walked out to the beach and stumbled on a free concert featuring London artist Ebony Bones. They were really fun. The music was catchy and they put on a great show. Check them out on youtube. We ended up riding out alo...

Monday, September 28, 2009. Blunt Park Cyclocross Mudfest. Wow, that was the muddiest race I have ever done! Since it was an Open Women's race, we were the last race of the day and the course had turned into mud soup by that time. There were at least three muddy ponds to ride through (during warm up I watched Michele A ride through one and it looked like half her bike disappeared into it - I couldn't stop laughing! My goal for the race was as follows: Stay upright. Who does 3 barriers? The juniors were f...

Velokat: Break from Racing

http://velokat.blogspot.com/2009/11/break-from-racing.html

Sunday, November 8, 2009. I took a couple of weekends off from racing in October. One was to attend the Shining Light on New England. First Regional Iyengar Yoga Conference. In Providence, RI. It was a wonderful conference, and I felt great afterward. (A bit sore, but really stretched and lengthened. I went for a 5k run in the middle of all the yoga sessions on Saturday, and it was the first time that I've ever run and NOTHING hurt at all. It was amazing! Because as we all know, Geoff doesn't like to run...

Sunday, June 28, 2009. Polenta with Sauteed Kale and Pearl Onions. Well, here I am posting another recipe and not a race report. Who am I? I'm not entirely sure about that yet, but what I do know is that although we've never had polenta before, we will most certainly be having it again. Instead of using pre-cooked polenta from a tube (like frozen cookie dough), I decided to try to make polenta from scratch. I followed the directions on the package, and it was great! One bunch kale, chopped. Geoff and I h...

I was never a great cook, but it fancied my interest for a bit. It's like having had a friend I hung around with a lot for a bunch of years, but then life swept us both into other directions. When I told her I was she said, "Are you a biker? The soup was colorful and also turned out fairly tasty, so I thought I'd record it in case I wanted to replicate it d...
