A Short History of Chinese Film

http://www.chinesefilm.us/history.html

Chinese Film: A Brief History. Note: this essay, and indeed this website, focuses on films from mainland China. In the very long term I'd like to expand it to include Hong Kong and Taiwan, but right now that is an overwhelming prospect.

Zhang Yimou

http://www.chinesefilm.us/directors/fifthgeneration/zhangyimou.html

Zhang's family faced difficulties because his father had served in Chiang Kai Shek's army, and his uncle and older brother had followed the nationalists to Taiwan. He was pulled out of high school and sent to work as a farm laborer for several years, and then to a textile mill. During this time, he acquired a camera, earning the money by selling blood, and began making photographs. Zhang graduated in 1982—the same year as Chen Kaige. All prominent directors of the Fifth Generation. Raise the Red Lantern.

The Road Home

http://www.chinesefilm.us/films/roadhome.html

Cast: Zhang Ziyi, Zhao Yulian, Zheng Hao, Sun Honglei. The film opens in black and white, with a land rover driving down a mountain road in winter. A male voiceover tells us that the narrator's (Yusheng's) father has died suddenly, and he is returning to his birth village for the first time in years; he says "I am very worried about my mother.". Yusheng goes to the old schoolhouse, where his mother is sitting outside. When he speaks to her, she begins sobbing, saying "Your father is dead! Once the new sc...

The World

http://www.chinesefilm.us/films/world.html

Cast: Zhao Tao, Chen Taisheng, Jing Jue, Jiang Zhong-Wei. A group of young men and women work in a Beijing theme park featuring reproductions of famous sights from all over the world. They struggle with their relationships with each other, as well as with the gap between their superficially cosmopolitan surroundings and their own lack of understanding of the world around them. Brief shot of another dance number, again with elaborate costumes, including large headdresses. Taisheng finds Tao at the park, a...
