These misconceptions can cause problems when introducing new information and need to be brought to the surface and faced before students can truly learn. Before interviewing subjects, we discussed a few basic interview procedures. We agreed on the questions listed below and the props that were given to the interviewers. We offered each person a pen and paper to help them to explain their understanding. This pen and paper was not used by everyone, and for those that opted not to use the paper, we encouraged them to demonstrate their understanding in another way. 1 Start with a clap. When we started this journey, we expected that most people would have some misunderstandings about sound. Our prediction was that most people would struggle with explaining how sound travels. We were surprised by the number of people who were confused about how clapping creates sound. Most people knew that sound has something to do with waves and vibrations. Most people knew that the wave can travel through air, water and solids. Some people had a very broad understanding, and spoke with little prompting.
