Apples & Pencils: August 2010
http://applesandpencils.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 29, 2010. I was talking with some friends about junior high days and how if given the choice, we’d run away from the chance to go back to those days like it was the plague. The memory of the awkwardness, gawkiness, and sheer idiocy of our pubescent mentalities still linger in our minds. It was embarrassing enough to experience it once. Thursday, August 26, 2010. In it are gems of activities that show off the author's creativity. I'm inspired by her genius ideas. Jealously inspired. People ...

Apples & Pencils: May 2010
http://applesandpencils.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 25, 2010. And keep waiting for a lovable dog to show up.one day buddy, one day! Monday, May 24, 2010. The fantastic Mr. Dahl. Who can forgot the way Willy Wonka crooned "Pure imagination" as he sipped crunched off a piece of his buttercup? Who led me to believe in snozzberries, whangdoodles, and in the BFG? I'm not sure if I would be an English teacher today if I didn't have those late night feasts, devouring. James and the Giant Peach. Danny the Champion of the World. They wait until they&#...

Apples & Pencils: March 2010
http://applesandpencils.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 29, 2010. A recent project I had students complete involved choosing a movie, ANY movie, and analyzing what the message of that movie was. Their movie choices turned out to be very revealing. My sweet, innocent students dove for Dumbo and Toy Story while the more advanced ones asked me if they could choose The Hangover. The movies ranged from My Girl to District 9 and everything in between. How many incidents conditioned her to always be on the defensive? As the credits to the movie started...

Apples & Pencils: Open Your Eyes
http://applesandpencils.blogspot.com/2011/03/open-your-eyes.html
Thursday, March 24, 2011. Open House, for me, follows a predictable routine. First come the jitters where I question my decorating, organizing, and teaching abilities. Then the elbow grease starts flowing as I scrub my room with a focus that parallels a marine’s. Finally the short but exhausting 2 hours of talking to parent after parent takes place. Usually, it’s a much ado about nothing. That is, until a former student comes back to visit. Tonight, I found out that one of the biggest troublemakers in my.

Apples & Pencils: February 2011
http://applesandpencils.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Friday, February 25, 2011. I recently attended an International School Recruitment fair in the hope of teaching abroad come 2011 fall. Submitting my resume to schools in Shanghai, Beirut, and Bahrain (kindly do not ask me where it is), left my knees wobbling and my head spinning from the thought of relocating to those prospective countries. In short, I felt completely lost. Destination: From Ms. Won’s classroom to the principal’s office. Make a right out of the classroom. Make a left at the main hallway.

Apples & Pencils: June 2010
http://applesandpencils.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, June 24, 2010. There are few pleasures as deeply satisfying as seeing someone use a gift that you have given to him or her. Months after the birthday, holiday, or the occasion that called for a celebration has passed, to see the person take out your gift, now worn with use and love, fills the heart with a sense of meaning. Monday, June 14, 2010. Because you loved me. There are some things that will never go out of style. It is the last week of school and I'm planning to teach my very last lesso...

Apples & Pencils: April 2010
http://applesandpencils.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, April 27, 2010. Wow, you're really mean! I mean.but.they're kids! You saw the knuckleheads! I threw out my best excuses but all to no avail for I heard back was "nazi", "micromanager", and just plain "scary". Actually it was a good thing that this occurred because it kicked my butt into applying for a Master's degree in Education, emphasis on teaching Reading/Language Arts. Because they're aren't any Teaching English for Dummies book available yet. Thursday, April 15, 2010. Me: Jose, I need to s...

Apples & Pencils: July 2010
http://applesandpencils.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, July 22, 2010. With my fifth year wrapped up and my sixth year as a teacher quickly approaching, it’s officially the longest relationship I’ve ever been in. And this last year wasn’t such a good year for us: I doubted, dreaded going to work on some days, and the D-word flitted through my mind like a nervous fly (ditch-ditch-ditch! But I’m glad we made it through the rough patch, because I think there’s something special about teaching. I really do. A great book called Tools for Teaching. 5 The ...

Apples & Pencils: Firsts
http://applesandpencils.blogspot.com/2011/03/firsts.html
Thursday, March 31, 2011. At a day and age where it feels like youth is corrupted with unlimited texting, Jersey Shore, and the internet, it's nice to know that there are still some firsts left to be discovered. Like the movie The Sixth Sense,. Which I was pleasantly surprised to find that many of students had never seen. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Parts of the Whole.
