chokka blog: July 2014
http://chokkablog.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Thinking allowed: musings on business, the economy and scottish politics @kevverage. Wednesday, 23 July 2014. Response to "Independence and the Economy - The Facts". You have probably been directed to this post because you have watched a rather slick video from "Business for Scotland" rather hilariously titled "Independence and the Economy - The Facts". For those who are unaware, I have discussed this (self)interest group at length here Who are Business for Scotland. This is true if you take a crude GDP/...
chokka blog: George Kerevan, my new SNP MP

Thinking allowed: musings on business, the economy and scottish politics @kevverage. Sunday, 10 May 2015. George Kerevan, my new SNP MP. Back in February I was trying to work out who in the SNP actually understood economics; I was directed towards George Kerevan. chokka blog: With Great Fiscal Power Comes Great Fiscal Responsibility
http://chokkablog.blogspot.com/2015/05/with-great-fiscal-power-comes-great.html
Thinking allowed: musings on business, the economy and scottish politics @kevverage. Saturday, 16 May 2015. With Great Fiscal Power Comes Great Fiscal Responsibility. The issue of "further powers" for Holyrood was discussed at Bute House on Friday when our Conservative Prime Minister met with our SNP First Minister. No matter; we are where we are. The very fact that the meeting took place in Scotland may have been relevant; was this a conciliatory decision on Cameron's part? But the drip-drip water-tortu...
chokka blog: June 2014
http://chokkablog.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Thinking allowed: musings on business, the economy and scottish politics @kevverage. Wednesday, 25 June 2014. Dunleavy and the Costs of Independence. If you only look at an arbitrarily defined sub-set of the costs involved in setting up an independent Scotland you can produce a figure of £200m to save the First Minister's blushes . but no matter how hard you try you can't disguise the fact that the true cost will be significantly more than £1bn. At its simplest the narrative can be summarised as;. The Fi...

Thinking allowed: musings on business, the economy and scottish politics @kevverage. Sunday, 31 August 2014. You Read it Here First. This is shamelessly self-congratulatory - but it's been an interesting week and I feel my Blogging activities have been somewhat vindicated. 1 Business for Scotland. Andrew Gilligan used my blog (supplemented with his own research and an interview with me) to publish this excellent piece in the Sunday Telegraph. 2 Dunleavy and Start-up Costs. I analysed Dunleavy's report an...

Colon Surgery Experience: Now That's Better
http://colonoff.blogspot.com/2010/07/now-thats-better.html
Saturday, 17 July 2010. At last, a positive Blog post. With any luck, my 'misery memoirs' style posts are now over and I can just start ticking off the steps as I recover fully. They are keeping me on iv antibiotics until Wednesday but I already feel transformed. I'm still on pain killers of course but I am walking more easily than I have since the op and have some semblance of an appetite. Again, I don't want to start name-checking, but the nursing staff here at the Murrayfield (as well as the Stoma car...
Colon Surgery Experience: Final Op Done
http://colonoff.blogspot.com/2010/10/final-op-done.html
Thursday, 21 October 2010. Well, I had the final op on Tuesday and all has gone smoothly; the bag has gone, my internal plumbing is working and the op scar is small and healing well. Should be out of hospital for the weekend and can get on with the rest of my life . hoo-bloody-rah! Posted by Kevin Hague. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Formerly Partner at OC&C. Colon Surgery Experience: Oooh, You Are Awful
http://colonoff.blogspot.com/2010/07/oooh-you-are-awful.html
Friday, 16 July 2010. Oooh, You Are Awful. So, here I am back in hospital. I ended up seeing my Consultant on Wednesday evening by which time I could hardly walk and was in tears because of the the pain (and in truth probably because of the psychological trauma of being so weak and realising things were getting worse). Rather a dull post I'm afraid - I'm lacking any wit or wry humour today; hopefully a temporary condition. Posted by Kevin Hague. 18 July 2010 at 23:56. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Colon Surgery Experience: Progress at Last
http://colonoff.blogspot.com/2010/07/progress-at-last.html
Tuesday, 27 July 2010. Well I've passed my '40 days and 40 nights' since the op and I am still wandering in the wilderness; that said although I've lost a lot of weight strictly speaking I haven't been fasting (so I'd better drop the "me versus Jesus" analogy). I managed a decent 30 minute walk today and I'm still feeling OK an hour later so I can imagine starting to get some proper exercise within the next few weeks. I guess that's it for now; it makes a nice change not to have bad news to post here.

Colon Surgery Experience: Life is Sweet
http://colonoff.blogspot.com/2010/08/life-is-sweet.html
Saturday, 7 August 2010. Day 53 . and I've had a good few days. Just been for a pleasant stroll, the sun is out and life feels good. Some signs of weight gain and definitely improving energy levels. Still have some down days (lots of sleeping mainly) but these are fewer and farther between. Nothing intersting or insightful to add so will leave it there; thanks again to all of those who have visited, emailed and/or offered support. Posted by Kevin Hague. Colon Surgery Experience: Moving Backwards?
http://colonoff.blogspot.com/2010/07/moving-backwards.html
Friday, 9 July 2010. A tough couple of days; determined not to let this get on top of me but it really is starting to wear me down. I have to remind myself that 'Big Picture', all is OK. The problem is my wound has turned really nasty. The more squeamish of you may not to read the rest of this post. Time to buck up and get on with it I guess. My next post will be more upbeat I promise. Posted by Kevin Hague. 9 July 2010 at 23:36. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Formerly Partner at OC&C. Kevin Hague&#...
Colon Surgery Experience: The Initial Operation
http://colonoff.blogspot.com/2010/06/initial-operation.html
Friday, 25 June 2010. I'm writing this Blog as much for my own good as anything else (it helps me process what has happened/is happening) and I publish to prevent me having to bore people with my stories (if they are curious, I can point them here) and to psychologically ghettoise this part of my life because I don't want this operation to be what defines me. Writing this 10 days after the intial op so will break-down the journey as best I remember. From the discussion with the surgeon I guess it's all v...

Thinking allowed: musings on business, the economy and scottish politics @kevverage. Wednesday, 31 January 2018. Bonds of Union: Part I. In war, moral power is to physical as three parts out of four". Debates about the United Kingdom's place within the European Union or Scotland's future within the United Kingdom are often framed as being about "head" vs. "heart". This framing of the debate is superficially persuasive but deeply flawed. If we rely on a utilitarian economic argument to persuade people to ...
