Dispatches from Can of Duck: I think a bear was there!

http://chooksiniowa.blogspot.com/2013/09/i-think-bear-was-there.html

Dispatches from Can of Duck. A wee corner of the great white north. Tuesday, September 17, 2013. I think a bear was there! This morning on the way down the driveway for Jet's walk, I noticed that a tree limb was hanging at a strange angle. It definitely wasn't like that yesterday. You can see it in roughly the middle of this picture, hanging out from the right side of the drive. Here you can see where the branch was broken from the main stem - it's not an easy break for a small animal to make. Black bear...

Dispatches from Can of Duck: Roasted Tomato Paste

http://chooksiniowa.blogspot.com/2013/09/roasted-tomato-paste.html

Dispatches from Can of Duck. A wee corner of the great white north. Friday, September 20, 2013. If I'm lucky and the frost doesn't hit for another week or so, I might get 1 or 2 more pans done. Here's what I do to make my roasted tomato sauce (which is closer to a paste, really). Select a good assortment of tomatoes and wash. After they are out of the oven, I let them cool for a while. I had an electric food mill for a while but it was cantankerous and inefficient - I much prefer this manual one. Min...

Dispatches from Can of Duck: A bit of this and that

http://chooksiniowa.blogspot.com/2014/05/a-bit-of-this-and-that.html

Dispatches from Can of Duck. A wee corner of the great white north. Saturday, May 31, 2014. A bit of this and that. Gosh, it's been ages and ages since I posted, and I apologize to any readers who still check in from time to time. I think about blogging on occasion and then I feel a bit overwhelmed and think "where do I start? It's still the pit of despair. That said, there have been some improvements. A new roof went on the place last fall, and it doesn't leak any more! It's a nice forest green colour.

Dispatches from Can of Duck: Post Holiday Putterings, and a Wee Tiny Little Bit of News

http://chooksiniowa.blogspot.com/2015/01/post-holiday-putterings-and-wee-tiny.html

Dispatches from Can of Duck. A wee corner of the great white north. Monday, January 5, 2015. Post Holiday Putterings, and a Wee Tiny Little Bit of News. The holiday season presented some opportunity for crafty bits and pieces to spring forth from my hands, especially since I didn't have a great deal of work in the last quarter for my writing business. As a result, I made a variety of gifts for friends and family. Here are some highlights:. I finally finished the Calm Waters Cowl. For myself, I've been wo...

Beyond the Blue Gate: April 2013

http://beyondthebluegate.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, April 23, 2013. BGF News April 2013. Precipitation to date this month: Rain: 6.7”. What’s up on the farm? Well, here we are in April and I'm pretty sure that I am not going to get the February and March newsletters done. Not sure how that happened, just suddenly, here it April! I'm fairly certain that every year since we moved to the farm (now 8 years ago) that the month of March has gotten shorter, to the extent that I'm convinced this year we skipped it altogether! Practical Farmers of Iowa) in.

Chard: Bright Lights Mix (a little beat up this week, but tasty nonetheless). Head Lettuce: Crisp Mint or. Snow (our pea beds are exploding, so you get to enjoy the ridiculous bounty). And one of the following:. Broccoli (the up and down temps are causing funny shapes, but still delicious flavor). For those with the Cheese option: Robiola and Black Pepper Chevre. 2 – 5pm. And t...
