Now we are protected by crumple zones, seatbelts, and air bags. These systems help you when a crash happens. On 23 June 2009, the Australian Federal Government announced that Electronic stability control (ESC) will be mandatory from 1 November 2011 for all new passenger vehicles and SUVs sold in Australia, and for all models from November 2013. On 15 July 2009, the Japanese ChooseESC! Campaign was kicked-off with a press conference in Tokyo. 60 journalists heard from a distingueshed panel of speakers about the functioning of ESC, its cost-benefit and effectiveness in reducing accidents. In a guest speech, Japanese rally star Kenjiro Shinozuka also underlined the importance of ESC to keep cars safely on track.
