Choosing Providence: August 2013
http://choosing-providence.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, August 20, 2013. On Broadway, Postscript. Barnaby Carriage House, 159 Sutton Street. On a walk this week down Sutton Street I came across this amazing structure in the middle of a street of frame houses. I jotted down the address and went exploring in my Providence volumes when I got home. Barnaby Castle, 299 Broadway. Describes the home, and the Colorado murder that helped to make it famous. But with no buyers it was taken off the market nearly two years ago. Illustration Credits and References.
Choosing Providence: ALCO, UNFI, and the Woonasquatucket River
http://choosing-providence.blogspot.com/2014/09/alco-unfi-and-woonasquatucket-river.html
Tuesday, September 2, 2014. ALCO, UNFI, and the Woonasquatucket River. The beautifully landscape riverfront near the old ALCO factory. I was particularly looking to see how complete the proposed Woonasquatucket River Greenway. To see a map of existing and proposed trail segments. In the course of our investigation, we came upon the old American Locomotive Company (ALCO). Complex, now home to United Natural Foods (UNFI). The ALCO neon sign. This led us to a lovely riverside walk, and a subsequent investig...
Choosing Providence: Alexander F. Adie House, Part 1
http://choosing-providence.blogspot.com/2014/02/alexander-f-adie-house-part-1.html
Thursday, February 6, 2014. Alexander F. Adie House, Part 1. The Alexander F. Adie House in 2013. The empty lot, January 27, 2014. Two weeks ago, I attended the annual meeting of the Providence Preservation Society, where one of the speakers lamented the recent and unexpected teardown of the Alexander F. Adie House, a 3-story Italianate double house at 93/95 Atwells Avenue. He was born in 1811 in Rhode Island; his father was a native of Scotland but his mother was a Rhode Islander. Nearly three years lat...
Choosing Providence: April 2012
http://choosing-providence.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 30, 2012. Cherry and Webb, Gladdings, and Shepard. I walked by this alley off Westminster Street in Providence last week, and spied "The Tri-Store Bridge". Seeing these logos brought me back to my childhood, and shopping in these large and well-known department stores with my mother (with a snack or lunch- maybe chicken croquettes! At Shepard's Tea Room). Cherry and Webb was a Massachusetts chain, founded in 1888, that went bankrupt in 2000. Illustration Credits and References. Providence P...
Choosing Providence: On Broadway: Barnaby Castle Update
http://choosing-providence.blogspot.com/2014/10/on-broadway-barnaby-castle-update.html
Wednesday, October 8, 2014. On Broadway: Barnaby Castle Update. This past weekend, the WBNA (West Broadway Neighborhood Association) hosted a house tour, and we had the opportunity to see the interiors of a number of homes of interest, including Barnaby Castle. Several people who read my previous post. On the Barnaby Castle, and its interesting history, inquired about the house, and about what's happening with the renovation, so here's an update. Below are some first floor photos. Hello Kaitlyn, Ive been...

Choosing Santa Fe: July 2011
http://choosing-santa-fe.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Observations about Santa Fe life, art, culture, and history with occasional other musings. Sunday, July 17, 2011. Last month I left Santa Fe and moved to Providence, Rhode Island. I'd spent almost five years in Santa Fe and loved a lot about the city- there were other things I liked less. I loved the mountains and the sunsets and my friends in Santa Fe; the state government, the lack of customer service attitude, the problems with the educational system, the drought and thunderstorms- not so much.

Friday, September 13, 2013. Boston Trolley Ride, 1903. A friend shared this on Facebook recently and I thought it needed to be posted here! Previously I had posted a film from a 1906 San Francisco trolley ride. In that post, I noted: "It's hard today for us to imagine what city streets were like in 1905. There was an element of lawlessness- and pedestrians, newsboys, bicyclists, trolleys, cars, horses, and wagons/sleds all occupied the streets willy-nilly.". In the middle of the film. A year or so after ...

Tuesday, October 4, 2011. During the first 35 years of its existence, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was headed by its founder, William Barton Rogers, former Civil War General Francis A. Walker, and two MIT professors. The selection of Henry Smith Pritchett to become the Institute's fifth president in 1900 signaled a shift in direction. Pritchett is largely a forgotten man in Boston and Cambridge but his influence on education and educators in this mecca of US education was enormous. Photo of ...

Monday, August 3, 2009. Should I have opted to become a vampire when I had the opportunity? In college I was dating a girl who, as it turns out, was a vampire. It took me several months to come to this realization for I was fixated on her limitless beauty and infinite wisdom. Her skin was as pale as the flesh of a lychee and glowed in the moonlight for she refused to be seen by day. In the end, I decided to break it off. Maybe I was too afraid, maybe the vampire "life" isn't for me, I don't know. Reply:v...
