What I'm reading now. The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton. Posted by Chris A. Asymp; Leave a comment. Is set in the gold rush region of New Zealand’s west coast, circa 1866. At its core, it’s a murder mystery that hinges on secrets kept and secrets shared among its characters, which include earnest young men and jaded professionals hotelier, shipping agent, journalist, clerk, madam. The clock had struck that late hour of twilight when all colors seem suddenly to lose their richness, and it was raining hard;...

What I'm reading now. Snow White Must Die by Nele Neuhaus. Posted by Chris A. Asymp; Leave a comment. I was intrigued by this book’s title, and discovered it was the first novel published in English (in translation) by popular German crime writer Nele Neuhaus. I liked Snow White Must Die. But its narrative style felt flat, somewhat stiff, almost mechanical. I’m not sure if that’s the result of reading in translation; I felt as if I was reading the story once removed, as if through a screen or curtain...

What I'm reading now. A Week in Winter by Maeve Binchy. Posted by Chris A. Asymp; Leave a comment. Published posthumously, A Week in Winter. Is Irish author Maeve Binchy’s final novel. While it will never be classified as great literature, this gentle tale of human potential was a satisfying winter vacation read. I’ve had a soft spot for Binchy’s stories since I first started following her in the 80s. Taken together, they trace Ireland’s progress in the late 20. It's nice to share! Larr; Previous post.

What I'm reading now. Longbourn by Jo Baker. Posted by Chris A. Asymp; Leave a comment. Quickly, we discern the essential tension of Longbourn. Between servants and those served: “Mr. and Mrs. Bennet were a pair of churchyard humps under the counterpane. The young ladies, all five of them sleeping in their beds, were dreaming of whatever it was that young ladies dream.”. Is Pride and Prejudice. Yet Baker obviously holds great affection for Pride and Prejudice. And Our Mutual Friend. S natural and domesti...
