For the past few days I have been in Las Vegas attending Photoshop World. A gathering of Photoshop professionals organized by the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. With this goal in mind, I began the conference by attending the Real World HDR workshop with Matt Kloskowski. The first three HDR images at...

Through the lens with Chris Gamel. Musings of a photographic educator. Safari Testimonial – Arthur Lim. This past June (2009), Arthur Lim and his wife Janny joined me on a Tanzania photo safari. They were kind enough to share some of Arthur’s pictures and the following:. The travel logistics and accommodations were excellent and all the staff members were very friendly and helpful. Nice hot showers as we returned to camp at the end of the day and great meals. Arthur and Janny, The Netherlands. Said this ...

Through the lens with Chris Gamel. Musings of a photographic educator. How Much Light Do I Need – Understanding The Light Meter. In the last article. I discussed the two primary camera controls: shutter speed and aperture. Both impact the amount of light reaching the digital sensor (or film for those still using traditional cameras). Through the lens with Chris Gamel. Musings of a photographic educator. Creative Use of Shutter Speed. This Lapped-Faced Vulture was frozen during take off by using a fast shutter speed (1-640 sec). As I explained here. Shutter speed provides control over the final exposure. What is less well known is that shutter speed also provides control over how motion will be recorded in the final picture. Wildebeest running on the Savannah frozen using a shutter speed of 1/125 sec. What shutter speed should you use?
Image of the Day – Lion in HDR | Through the lens with Chris Gamel

Through the lens with Chris Gamel. Musings of a photographic educator. Image of the Day – Lion in HDR. Lion image using HDR (High Dynamic Range). Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania. And manipulated the HDR. Settings to take the dynamic range to the extremes. I have seen a lot of landscape images done in HDR, but almost nothing that includes wildlife. I like the end result, which looks almost like a detailed painting instead of a photograph. What do you think? By Chris Gamel on November 15, 2009. Image of the Day.
