Building Up and Tearing Down: Even as Demand Grows, some Chicago Neighborhoods Don’t. Story looking at how new construction in high-demand Chicago neighborhoods led to multifamily buildings being torn down and replaced with single family homes, reducing the housing stock and population density. Analysis was based on nearly 10 years of Chicago building permit data. Final product included audio story aired on WBEZ and web package with text, photos and responsive charts made in D3.

A Series Of Possibilities. Interactive package examining why the team favored to win the World Series often doesn’t. Illustrated the point by building a tool that allowed readers to simulate the 2016 playoffs as many times as they wanted. Also designed and built the final website to live outside our CMS. Buy-in to Chicago’s neighborhood grammar schools. A map showing how the percentage of students attending their neighborhood school changed from 2001 to 2014. The map not only takes into account attendance changes at schools, but whether schools moved or closed. Map is built using leaflet and D3, with data analysis done in python using Pandas. Part of a larger package that won first prize for data journalism from the Education Writers Association.
