Character rigging, technical art. Random Enough” - Hacking Past Your Problems When Prototyping. Posted on November 21, 2013 - category: tech-art. In this blog post I’ll talk a bit about prototyping games or apps and moving quickly when stuck in a tricky programming problem. The loop took a long time to run… Sometimes several seconds or more. So instead, I wrote a Lua script that ran iterations of the while loop until it found some. Then, whenever it found a true result, I simply stored those combinat...
Rigmarole Blog – Maya Scripts

Character rigging, technical art. Reset Selected (Maya hotkey). This script is intended to be used a Maya hotkey. It resets all selected objects to a neutral (local) transformation of 0,0,0,0,0,0,1,1,1. To mimic the hotkey in Softimage, map this script to Ctrl-Shift-R. This is very useful for animation. It fully support undo and redo. Create a Single Follicle (Maya). This script uses PyMEL which lets you easily access the follicle that you create as a casted PyNode. Select a Nurbs surface and run):.

Character rigging, technical art. A Manual Progress Bar in Scrivener. Posted on November 18, 2013 - category: tools. In this blog post I want to show you a cool trick for making semi-graphical Status labels in the writing program Scrivener, and then explain some of the reasons you might want to do this. I used it to make a manual progress bar. Markdown, LaTeX, ebook, Final Draft, Word formats and more. So it is also a great tool for blogging, research, course notes or technical documentation for software.

Character rigging, technical art. Using a Unit Vector to Make a Cylindrical Foot Roll. Posted on April 03, 2012 - category: character-rigging. Here is a tutorial that will demonstrate how to use a Unit Vector to animate the pivot point of a cylinder so that the cylinder will roll on its bottom edge in any direction. I’m using this technique for the feet of my Mini Mammoth rig. But it could also be useful for robot feet, or adapted into different shapes for a variety of uses. Notes about this tutorial:.

Matthew Lee: Quick Tip : P4Python Tickets and Motionbuilder 2013
http://matthewleeanimatortech.blogspot.com/2014/09/quick-tip-p4python-tickets-and.html
Monday, 8 September 2014. Quick Tip : P4Python Tickets and Motionbuilder 2013. Motionbuilder 2013 uses Python 2.6 and unfortunately P4Python 2.6 does not support tickets (or not in an obvious way that I could find). Trying to access tickets through the module will result in the following error. However simply adding the run tickets function from P4Python 2.7 into P4Python 2.6, will give you access to tickets through 2.6, and thus Motionbuilder. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Matthew Lee: Motionbuilder : Creating a 3rd Person Game Camera System
http://matthewleeanimatortech.blogspot.com/2014/03/motionbuilder-creating-3rd-person-game.html
Sunday, 9 March 2014. Motionbuilder : Creating a 3rd Person Game Camera System. If your game engine stores camera settings in a Python parsable language, for example JSON or xml, you may be able to port your engines camera system into Motionbuilder. The idea is to give animators the exact same cameras from game, in Mobu and with the same control (XBox pad). From the Asset Browser create 2 Nulls and a Camera. Name the Nulls 'GameCameraPivot' and 'GameCameraLookAt', and name the camera GameCamera. Double c...

Blog of Rob Galanakis (@robgalanakis). What do you want next? On 24 Feb, 2015. We are focusing on A and B, and in a month or so we’ll start focusing on C, while also keeping focus on A and B. When we do prioritization at work, I insist we have a. Of priorities or coarse features. In other words, “what do you want delivered next? Is often the number of people or teams). Why bother with python and config files? | RobG3d
http://www.robg3d.com/2012/06/why-bother-with-python-and-config-files
Blog of Rob Galanakis (@robgalanakis). Why bother with python and config files? On 26 Jun, 2012. I’ve never understood why people design systems in python to use config files. IMO there are two types of data and we can handle them both in dead simple ways:. First: Read/write data, like UI/user preferences. Second: Read-only data, like application configuration. Just make it code! There’s a good deal of data we may only know at runtime, or we cannot statically represent, so we end up making the syst...
How do you estimate that which you’ve never done? | RobG3d

Blog of Rob Galanakis (@robgalanakis). How do you estimate that which you’ve never done? On 29 Jan, 2015. Have you heard about #noestimates. Well I’m sure you can guess what it is anyway. But reading the debates reminded me of a story. While at Game Developer’s Conference a few years ago, I was arguing about estimation with a certain project manager, who, despite having no actual development experience, was in charge of development (Icelandic society is notoriously nepotistic). How would you plan Incarna.

Blog of Rob Galanakis (@robgalanakis). Technical debt metaphors get it so wrong. On 21 Jan, 2015. In my previous post about technical debt. I explained how modern definitions of technical debt are harmful. Now I turn my attention to equally harmful metaphors. Viktoras Makauskas made the following metaphor in a comment on my last post. This is a pretty perfect stand-in for metaphors I’ve read in other articles that harmfully define technical debt. 8220;You” are the “business” (the role o...This isn’...
