Our life, a lot about Joel, and a little bit more. Friday, June 19, 2009. It's been a fun and busy summer so far. Lindsey was here to visit with Claire and Ashton. Jacob and Ashton are about 4 weeks apart so we know they will be lifelong friends. I know we all wished that Keith had been able to make the trip with his family, but it was so nice to catch up with Lindsey, albeit crazy with 4 children under 2.5 in the house! I've never been very handy, but I'd like to change that. We know biting was happening both ways, but unfortunately Joel bites harder. Salsa bowl, he mimics words we use, he now tries to walk down the stairs like we do. He may have had some idea that Lucy was being reprimanded (with the same word we use to redirect Joel), but his act seemed more like blind imitation, something he saw dad do and that he wanted to try too. Imitate, even as adults, is so subtly impressed upon us by our friends/media/etc that we remain blind to what we are becoming? Conscious choice to be more Christlike or kind or diligent or selfless.

Today I asked Joel to leap into my arms after he climbed up on the coffee table. He loved it. The game mostly involved him stepping or falling off the table. He laughed and laughed, and I hardly put him down before he was scrambling to climb on the table again. Dad had to push the limit a bit, so I put a row of couch cushions in front of the table. I held out my hand, and Joel performed his first belly flop onto a sea of green microweave. It's cool to see how he trusts me. Did you even let Lucy try?

This made me giggle. It is an extra credit midterm exam question for some chemistry class. I hope it's legit, cause it's pretty freakin' funny. It reminds me of questions asked by the professor of a class I half-audited in college, History and Systems of Psychology. I've been taught to ask questions of my students that start out predictable and easy and move to un. Predictable and rigorous. I need to throw a couple of these on one of my exams and see what happens. His name was Dr. Arvin Oake, right?

During spring break this year we went down to Joplin to visit Christie's grandparents for a day. Christie's grandpa has cancer (lymphoma) and was having a pretty bad day by the time we got there. He was so weak that he couldn't do any moving by himself. As the strongest person in the house it quickly became my duty to help him get around, go to the bathroom, and ultimately, to dress him.
