Monday, February 13, 2012. Writers Conferences: Not the Best Invention. I just read this. Guest post over at "Girls With Pens" and it pretty much confirmed what I've always thought about writer's conferences: they're not as necessary as they'd have us believe. I usually avoid book/writing festivals, but I did once attend one. I was in school at the time and got roped into introducing an author (weirdly enough, the author was none other than Randall Wallace. All that hooey about workshopping your writing?

Christopher Hobson's Blog: The Disturbing Persistence of Star Wars

http://www.christopherhobson.blogspot.com/2012/02/disturbing-persistence-of-star-wars.html

Wednesday, February 8, 2012. The Disturbing Persistence of Star Wars. Listen, I'm a mega-huge Star Wars fan. It hit me at a very formative time of my life, and I've basically measured every other movie- consciously or unconsciously- against it. But come on, man. All six movies in 3-D? But what about the massive pile of stinking wreckage that is Episodes VI and I-III? Does Lucas think the visceral outpouring of bile against these movies was just a fluke? I have no larger point in writing this. I just ...

Christopher Hobson's Blog: December 2011

Sunday, December 25, 2011. New Years Resolution: Keep It Simple. I can imagine lots of things, but this I can't. What I can envisage is this: finishing my wip, editing it to a pulp, rebuilding it into something beautiful, showing it to writers I trust, re-editing it, and then publishing it myself. This is all I can actually see doing. So this is my New Year's resolution: keep it simple. Publish your vision. See if anyone catches on. And then keep writing. Labels: Legacy vs. Self-Publishing. I believe the...

Christopher Hobson's Blog: Fiction is the Best Way to Tell the Truth

http://www.christopherhobson.blogspot.com/2012/02/fiction-is-best-way-to-tell-truth.html

Friday, February 3, 2012. Fiction is the Best Way to Tell the Truth. I've been thinking a lot lately about why I want to be a writer. Or if I even want to be a writer. There are a trillion infinity reasons not to be a writer: it's a massive pain in the neck, it's a lonely thing to write all by yourself, if you haven't published something by the age of 30 people start looking at you like you're a gorgon, etc. Until I hit on this: writing is just about the only time in life you get to be totally honest.

Christopher Hobson's Blog: September 2011

http://www.christopherhobson.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 29, 2011. Give Us Someone to Root For. So I've been watching the show "Revenge". On ABC. The second episode aired last night, and I have to say, though it looked preposterously stupid from the advertisements, I've been pleasantly surprised at the high level of storytelling going on. And the acting ain't half bad either. There's only one problem: everyone sucks. But honestly, I hate just about everyone on the show. Otherwise, why am I reading the book? I don't think I have much to lear...
