Friday, 23 April 2010. St Mary the Virgin sits atop a hill (or what we in Essex call a hill) overlooking the heart of the village and whilst the church and its position are lovely it contains one of the most over restored monument I've yet seen. A pretty, small village by a tiny stream. The churchyard has kept some of its gravestones since the 17th century, one with a cherub and two skulls in foliage deeply carved. Monday, 31 January 2011. St Mary the Virgin was unsurprisingly locked. Since it, and the adjacent Hall, are in the middle of nowhere. It would have been nice for a keyholder to have been listed since this looked to be a fascinating church in a slightly shabby state. Saturday, 26 June 2010. I'm at a loss - how does Finchingfield get into Simon Jenkin's 1000 Best Churches over Felsted? Both churches are similar in layout and design, although I'll grant Finchingfield the prettier location - I think this swung it - both, however, are surrounded by medieval remnants and houses but, and to my mind it's a big but, Felsted has the Rich Chapel. All Saints is a curious mix of old and new and is another church that has suffered from the attentions of the Victorians, added to which it "suffered much damage by enemy action during the world war 1939-1945". I've been close to St Mary several times but never had time to visit, it's always been on my way back home when time was running out - and I'm glad I found time to stop last week. It's tiny with a Tudor brick south porch, a bijou tower and is old. Throughout the length and breadth of England, in every village and hamlet, churches, often hundreds of years old, bear testimony to the spirituality and devotion of the people. Sadly, the decline of faith in the population in England has seen the closure of many of these beautiful buildings. Churches, many of which, withstood the trauma of the Reformation, have now become redundant. Their fate is unsure, some have been converted to private homes, factories or even demolished.
