That God Question: January 2008
http://thatgodquestion.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, 31 January 2008. Question 5: Good luck or good management? I argued that you cannot dismiss a model because it. Unlikely, and you cannot choose one model over another purely on the grounds that it. Less complicated. Something does not become a valid explanation simply because you like it and want it to be true. The observable behaviour of the universe is not subject to human whims and tastes. Note: the observable behaviour of the universe. Subject to human fallibility, see. That a simple model ...

That God Question: Question 5: Good luck or good management? Part One.
http://thatgodquestion.blogspot.com/2008/01/question-5-good-luck-or-good-management.html
Tuesday, 29 January 2008. Question 5: Good luck or good management? What are the chances that something as amazing as you or me could randomly appear in the universe? What are the chances that a planet capable of supporting life should happen to exist in the universe? What are the chances that the unlikely combination of events that science asserts caused life to errupt should happen spontanteously on such a planet? Is simple always better? We also need to be aware of things that. One area where intuitio...

That God Question: February 2008
http://thatgodquestion.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html
Friday, 29 February 2008. Is there an answer? I got a bit diverted by the comments for Part 1. And may have to just cut'n'paste some of that discussion into this new post as I covered a lot of what I was going to say. I'm still pretty happy with the claim that the Universe does not. That may be the worst sentence I've ever written . perhaps I need some revolting instant coffee). So why bother attempting to argue something that culminates in such an ugly sentence? Order requires a designer. Terms, rather ...

That God Question: Question 6: Is there an answer? Part One.
http://thatgodquestion.blogspot.com/2008/02/question-6-is-there-answer.html
Tuesday, 26 February 2008. Question 6: Is there an answer? Disclaimer: this post threatens to meander deep into the territory of bitter instant coffee and meagre jazz cigarettes. I said that science is all about the models, not about absolute truth. A scientific model is one thing, the thing that it models is quite another. It's not a case of "never the twain shall meet", but they are very definitely distinct. Here is where it gets a little "instant coffee" . apologies in advance if I accidentally us...

That God Question: Lemma 3: science does not know everything
http://thatgodquestion.blogspot.com/2008/01/lemma-3-science-does-not-know.html
Wednesday, 23 January 2008. Lemma 3: science does not know everything. This is less of a lemma and more of a clarification. An exercise in filtering the mud out of the water. There is a common argument when one attempts to apply science. To certain subjects. It runs something like this: "Science does not know everything. Science does not address X. Therefore X is somehow 'outside' science.". One step at a time then . Science does not know everything. At the other extreme of scale, Heisenberg. Know more t...

That God Question: Question 5: Good luck or good management? Part Three.
http://thatgodquestion.blogspot.com/2008/02/question-5-good-luck-or-good-management.html
Monday, 18 February 2008. Question 5: Good luck or good management? A quick summary of parts one and two. I could pretend this is for the benefit of the reader but it is mainly because I've been very lazy updating the blog and need to remind myself what I'm talking about). Important point number one:. You cannot dismiss a model on subjective grounds. Important point number two:. The scientific method is objective and is open to everybody. Good luck or good management? An aside on simplicity. In Important...

That God Question: Definition 2: Science
http://thatgodquestion.blogspot.com/2008/01/definition-2-science.html
Monday, 7 January 2008. Science' is a term that is much abused and misunderstood. Perhaps not as much as the term 'God' . but it's not been around for quite as long and is doing its best to catch up. If I mention science anywhere in this blog then this is what I mean. You may not agree with this definition, but it's the one I'm using and I'm the one doing the typing. Science is a set of well-defined models that can be tested against observation. A list of absolute facts. A system of belief. Describe a sc...
