Alex (not his real name) was 4, but still couldn’t speak. At mealtimes, he refused to eat anything but plain white rice. In class, he bit classmates. When upset, he banged his head against the wall or hid under the table. Teachers suspected Alex had special needs, but his parents were reluctant to send him for assessment. The family’s financial difficulties could have played a role. Things took a turn for the worse when Alex’s father was jailed for a crime and, upon his release, sent home to India.

Five-year-old Alvin (not his real name) lives in a 3-room rental flat with his parents and 3 siblings. One of his siblings is a step-sibling who lives in China with Alvin’s mother’s family. His father has a history of incarceration for drug abuse and is believed to be still abusing drugs at home. Alvin sometimes shares with his teachers about his father’s aggressive behavior and incidents at home. Although he is doing well academically, he hits classmates and talks back at teachers.
