Circumstantial: Skills in Psychiatry - Formulation
http://circumstantially.blogspot.com/2011/03/skills-in-psychiatry-formulation.html
Incidental thoughts about life in psychiatry. Friday, March 11, 2011. Skills in Psychiatry - Formulation. I am going on a journey. I'm on my way to the place where good formulations get made. I've started reading about formulation as a skill and I'm going to get practicing. I'm just realising that there's a hole in my exam armour, that needs repairing. I'll be writing some postcards on the way. PS This is what I just posted a couple of weeks ago. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Incidental thoughts about life in psychiatry. Tuesday, November 30, 2010. If a drug company buys the lunch does that mean we've sold out? If the lunch comes with a medication spruik by a top 6 Master-Chef Contestant then is the sell-out worth it? So Alvin gave a teuously linked talk about anxiety and being on Master Chef. He recommended taking a little S- - -l XR to cope with performance anxiety on the show. I hope he was joking. Is that I do. Drug companies spend money this way because it works. Emily h...
Circumstantial: Responding to questions
http://circumstantially.blogspot.com/2010/12/responding-to-questions.html
Incidental thoughts about life in psychiatry. Monday, December 6, 2010. I am going to post a series prompted by the questions and statements I hear, mainly at work, but some will be interesting ones I hear in other places. The thread of similarity will be the ideas about mental health that each prompt raises. There will be post here, from a psychiatric perspective and a linked post on my personal blog. Which will be framed more, (need I say), personally. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

http://circumstantially.blogspot.com/2010/12/kids-had-started-to-call-me-dad.html
Incidental thoughts about life in psychiatry. Monday, December 20, 2010. The kids had started to call me Dad. I thought about family and how it's constructed after hearing a patient say this. One day. He had ended his brief relationship with a woman and his regret was expressed in the statement about the children starting to accept him into the household. What do you think? Learning who to trust. 10 things I want my kids to learn. Anxiety for my children. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles. Everyone will share the story of your wonderful goodness; they will sing with joy about your righteousness. We speak, not only to tell other people what we think, but to tell ourselves what we think. John Hughlings Jackson, 1932. Meanwhile, I do love to listen, so feel free to say hello. Grant us so to know you,.
Time to Listen: October 2012

Sunday, October 21, 2012. There are words made specially for theology textbooks. People polish them and bring them out on silver platters for special occasions - when they want to look smart in a debate or prove they know lots of stuff. Then there was the time someone talked about courage and introduced me to. I've read the story of David and Goliath. Before. I've taught it in Sunday School. I've heard other sermons on it. You probably know it, too. Consider who you identify with in the story. I am the c...
Time to Listen: What do you think of a doctor who says 'I don't know?'
http://alisteningspace.blogspot.com/2008/06/what-do-you-think-of-doctor-who-says-i.html
Wednesday, June 4, 2008. What do you think of a doctor who says 'I don't know? This week I attended training in how to deal sensitively with families of patients in mental health. We began discussing difficult questions which we sometimes get asked by families. One of the common themes that comes up is concerns about prognosis, the future for the patient and their family, and 'is full recovery possible? Where did we get the idea that we are not allowed to be uncertain or not know? I think that our empath...

Tuesday, August 28, 2012. Blangst, navel-gazing, call it what you will. In blogging, I'd rather be artless, than artful. I'm not a writer and I struggle with self-revelation. I'm naturally a listener and the contents of my heart stick in my throat. There's a few difficult spots. I don't do advice - I find it hard to look at my life and tell you what you should do with yours. I don't do design or fantastic images or cool stuff. I am extremely un-hip. I am everything Frankie magazine is not. I ...I love to...
Time to Listen: The Gift
http://alisteningspace.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-gift.html
Tuesday, December 25, 2012. At my most cynical, it's the shopping that saps me. I don't mind browsing, but choosing is agonising, and any time spent at the shops in December is uncomfortable. I care too much about buying the present that will delight. Family and giving and having my cooking on show lays me bare. I see my dependence on praise from others, my fear of disappointing, my pride. The gift I need is grace. We cling to these Christmas rituals, don't we? It's such a time for love and acceptance...
Time to Listen: The Boss
http://alisteningspace.blogspot.com/2013/03/the-boss.html
Thursday, March 21, 2013. I got married fifteen years later and we laughed over identical copies of. Ghost of Tom Joad. We lay on the ugly blue carpet, smiling at the ceiling, and talking Springsteen. He's an ideal hero, because I can read my own emotion and passion into him. We spend a lot of time tut-tutting at foolish or ridiculous famous people. The ones that would just be embarrasing or shameful, if we didn't all know their names. But here's to the regular famous people. The ones who per...Ill never...

Wednesday, November 28, 2012. It's the moment when you think, "I'm not good enough," that it's got you. I went to the interview with my resume clutched in my hand. I'd forgotten to send it, so brought it myself. I'd not thought much about it's inadequacy. Not until he said in passing - "This is your abbreviated CV? The smart-mouth me thought, "No, that's all of it. Entirely." But I didn't think that till much later. Don't the best answers arrive much too late to use? Shame re-imagined is vulnerability.
Time to Listen: Anxiety
http://alisteningspace.blogspot.com/2010/06/anxiety.html
Thursday, June 24, 2010. I want my children to live their lives avoiding the mistakes that I have made. Most parents want good things for their children - safety from pain, fulfilling, blessed life, good job healthy relationships. I'm sure you have a list, too. Dissecting my wishes, I realise that I would like them to be a more advanced version of myself. To have evolved to be less sinful, less broken, less. I actually want instant, unearned maturity. My anxiety about this leads to catastrophizing. And, ...
Time to Listen: April 2013
http://alisteningspace.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Saturday, April 20, 2013. The mind is such a vast concept, especially as I've been told I have the mind of Jesus. Well not just me. A whole bunch of us have it and the taste of bread and wine fires thoughts of forgiveness and seventy times seven chances. I'm starting with what I can see and hear and touch, because input is where we begin to interpret and convince ourselves that we understand. It's unlikely we fully do. You're right. It barely matters. Predictably, I'll try. This is a blog, after all.

Circumstantial Evidence | the way I see it
The way I see it. Posted by Daniel Katz. On November 20, 2011. Early in the summer I went on an “extreme hiking” trip with a cool group of coworkers. Well, it was supposed to be extreme hiking. The only extreme thing about it was the extremely bad judgment of our tour guide, and the drinking later on that night. We take off at 9:15 – a bus load of foreigners and a Korean tour guide, Charles. Charles is thinly built with parted hair, glasses and a permanently wide grin. After working out the numbers in my...
