CISM at the High Altitude Observatory of NCAR. Figure x: The top panel shows the modeled vertical drifts at Jicamarca (red line) and the ones observed by the Jicamarca ISR (blue crosses). The bottom panel shows the the same modeled vertical drifts (red line) and the IMF Bz value (green line). Both of these panels are for the 2nd and 3rd of April 2004. The first of these days was geomagnetically quiet; a geomagnetic storm occurred on the 3rd.

Coupled Magnetosphere Ionosphere Thermosphere Model. There are several boundary layers to take into consideration in space physics near the Earth. The solar wind generates a shock at the outter boundary of the magnetosphere. The inner magnetosphere affects auroral activity at the ionosphere boundary, which drives certain processes at the thermosphere. Magnetosphere and Ionosphere flyby. This movie shows Magnetosphere and Ionosphere parameters for a solar event in May 2005. Notice the auroral activity on May 15, 2005 @ 6:00 (about 13 seconds into the video). The Ionosphereic electron density in the E-region is visualized first, with a transition to the F region electron density, followed by a transition to the F-region neutral temperature. Created by Pete Schmitt and Mike Wiltberger with direction from Stan Solomon, Alan Burns and Wenbin Wang.

The Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry Magnetosphere Model. The LFM solves the ideal MHD equations using solar wind as input. The advection term is solved using a Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) scheme using the Partial Donor Method. The magnetosphere data for the LFM is solved on distorted spherical grid, with grid points clustered near the bowshock and tail. Cell edges are non-orthogonal, so a basic cell is a general hexahedron. To learn more about a coupled magnetosphere/thermosphere/ionosphere model using the LFM.
