The Northern Avenue into Virginia, Romney to Delaplane Tour
http://www.civilwarfieldtrips.com/NorthernCorridor
Into Virginia from the North 1861. In 1861, Federal Troops entered Virginia by four primary routes:. From Washington into Northern Virginia. By water to the peninsula between the James and York Rivers and toward Richmond. From Maryland into the Shenandoah Valley. From the Ohio River into Western Virginia. And the Grafton to Camp Allegheny Tour. On the Romney to Delaplane tour. We explore the Northern Route in which the Union crossed the Potomac from Maryland into Western Virginia. The Glories of War.
Civil War Tour Third Winchester
http://www.civilwarfieldtrips.com/Shenandoah1864/bolivar_opequon.html
Harper's Ferry to Winchester. Into the Shenandoah, 1864. On this tour we followed Sheridan's pursuit of Early's army after Second Kernstown and the burning of Chambersburg. Grant had consolidated four departments into one under Phil Sheridan and sent him to defeat Jubal Early. We called this part of the long struggle for control of the Shenandoah Valley the Yoyo War as both armies moved up and down the valley in late summer 1864. Neither side had an accurate idea of the size of the other one's army.
Monocacy to Kernstown Civil War Tour
http://www.civilwarfieldtrips.com/Shenandoah1864/monocacy.html
Into the Shenandoah, 1864. At Monocacy Battlefield in Maryland, we studied Jubal Early's 1864 attack on Washington. At Monocacy, Early's army was delayed by Union troops under Lew Wallace, who were unable to stop him but succeeded in holding him in Monocacy long enough for reinforcements to reach the forts surrounding Washington. Civil War Field Trips - Why I Study the Civil War
http://www.civilwarfieldtrips.com/why.html
Why I Study the Civil War. To me, the most fascinating things about the Civil War are not the dates or names of generals, but rather the questions that are hard for me to answer fully:. WHY did this tragic war happen? How did it get so far out of control? What brought men by the thousands into this bloody conflict? Why did they leave their families, their homes, the lives they had built, to travel far away and risk all? Why did men who never owned slaves give their lives for a slave-holding confederacy?
The Drama of History through Field Trips
http://www.civilwarfieldtrips.com/drama.html
Experiencing the Drama of History. Unlike some of my classmates, I am not an expert on the American Civil War. But I grew up in Virginia, and absorbed a sense of the drama and tragedy of this horrendous conflict. What motivated men to take up arms against their brothers, to struggle so hard for so long, to suffer and die for a cause that is still unclear over 130 years later? How did it come about, what did it look like and feel like? Why did this war take on the proportions of an epic? The geography cha...

August 8, 2015. Flash the Model Dog. Here's another shot of Flash. I'm sharing this one with Sepia Saturday. By the way, I just learned it is International Cat Day and I apologize to all you cat-lovers. I did not have advance notice and since I don't have a cat, I don't have a cat picture ready for the occasion. Meanwhile, I used the same image of Flash to make a meme. 12:21 AM, August 09, 2015. Cute pic of Flash! 2:58 AM, August 09, 2015. Adorable beautiful and funny dog picture. 5:03 AM, August 09, 2015.

August 10, 2015. Murals at the Fairgrounds. I was delighted to see this permanent mural on one of the buildings at the Warren County Fairgrounds near Front Royal. The View from Squirrel Ridge: August 2015
http://webcroft.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
August 31, 2015. PS I notice that the title is easily misread on a cell phone so here's clarification. The word is collage with an A, as in artistic assemblage. Or perhaps not so artistic, like when we tore out magazine pictures and pasted them together for a school assignment. I will try to remember that sometimes readers use very small devices to visit my blog. Do you see Puff the Magic Dragon? Sorry about the dappled light from the trees.). Labels: Arts and Crafts. A Few More Beach Pictures. August 29...

August 9, 2015. Community Mission Church of the Brethren. This pleasant-looking church is on Coffmantown Road near Back Road in Shenandoah County. The View from Squirrel Ridge: Entrance Buildings, Endless Caverns
http://webcroft.blogspot.com/2015/08/entrance-buildings-endless-caverns.html
August 5, 2015. Entrance Buildings, Endless Caverns. The limestone buildings at the cavern entrance were built from stone excavated out of the cave when the pathways were widened and leveled. There's a souvenir shop with a small selection of snacks and a few exhibits. The over-sized bat on the ceiling is not real, but there are some brown bats that live in the cave in the winter, we were told. I wiped off the moisture but my subjects had walked on. REPRODUCTION CIVIL WAR BUCKLES & PLATES
REPRODUCTION CIVIL WAR BUCKLES and PLATES". It is a well known fact that reproduction buckles can fool both the novice and experienced collector. Even long time reputable dealers have been and currently are being deceived. I must admit that I have also been victimized a few times over the years. As you can see from the photo above, it is hard to tell the difference! You might ask. Well, Gary is one of the most knowledgeable and respected buckle experts in the country. Gary owns Hanover Brass. By Howard C...
