Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Living the life in Saint-Aignan: Sancerre and other things, like stoves

http://ckenb.blogspot.com/2015/05/sancerre-and-other-things-like-stoves.html

Sancerre and other things, like stoves. Here are a few more photos of the Sancerre area, two hours east of Saint-Aignan and two hours south of Paris by car. We drove through there last October and spent some time looking at the scenery. The Sancerre vineyards and villages don't look that much different from the Loire Valley (Touraine) vineyards, except for one thing: it's much hillier over there. Maybe a stove like this one would be nice in our fireplace. 8212; "God no! They are cheap stoves made with ve...

Living the life in Saint-Aignan: Some of my favorite plants

http://ckenb.blogspot.com/2015/05/some-my-favorite-plants.html

Some of my favorite plants. For decades I've kept a lot of plants in pots around the house and yard. In San Francisco, where the low temperature seldom went below 40ºF ( 5ºC) — and where the high temperature was seldom above 70ºF (20ºC) — most of my plants could stay outside year-round. Here in Saint-Aignan it's more complicated, because I have to bring a lot of plants inside in November and keep them in until April or May. Including the one on the right, Portulacaria afra. Above is a yellow jasmine plan...

Living the life in Saint-Aignan: Mais où la glace est-elle passée ?

http://ckenb.blogspot.com/2015/05/mais-ou-la-glace-est-elle-passee.html

Mais où la glace est-elle passée? This is the period in France and other parts of Europe that's called Les Saints de Glace, or the Ice Saints. Traditionally, the weather turns cold around May 10 for three or four days, making it a better idea to wait until May 15 to set out delicate, frost-sensitive garden plants like tomatoes. That's the conventional wisdom. I need to dig up and transplant this little red maple tree, a volunteer. put it on the list. I wish this plant and the pot were mine, but they belo...

Living the life in Saint-Aignan: The marsh and all

http://ckenb.blogspot.com/2011/03/marsh-and-all.html

The marsh and all. MA's retirement apartment complex is in a part of town that was not settled or built on back when I was growing up. It's on the edge of a salt marsh, and the marsh is actually the "headwaters" of Calico Creek. The water in the "creek" is salty, or at least brackish. This is the view from the back of MA's building. New cones growing on a long leaf pine —. They look like little ears of corn. A little tree covered in Spanish moss. Mild except for summer, that is. Summers here are much...

Living the life in Saint-Aignan: We got wood and now it's turned chilly

http://ckenb.blogspot.com/2015/05/we-got-wood-and-nows-it-turned-chilly.html

We got wood and now it's turned chilly. What's wrong with the picture above? There are no plants in the ground (except those two stray rhubarb clumps) on May 20! I'm not too worried because I remember other years when we didn't or couldn't set plants out in the garden until June 1, either because it was too chilly or too damp. At this point, we are hoping that the warm weather will come back in June. The temperature this morning is just below 45ºF (7ºC) at our house. What's right with the pictures above?

Living the life in Saint-Aignan: Bleu, blanc, rouge

http://ckenb.blogspot.com/2015/05/bleu-blanc-rouge.html

Bleu, blanc, rouge. 16 May, 2015 07:51. Très patriotique. Jadore les pivoines, particulièrement les rouges. 16 May, 2015 08:37. Like and the pix, too! 16 May, 2015 08:47. What are the blue flowers? A variety of salvia? The peony is lovely. I dont see them growing here in Southern California, unfortunately. 16 May, 2015 09:23. Yes, sage. We use the leaves in cooking. In fact, tomorrows plan is a roasted chicken with sage and 40 cloves of garlic. 16 May, 2015 11:48. Bon appétit quand même , soyons fairplay!

Living the life in Saint-Aignan: The seasonal chore...

http://ckenb.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-seasonal-chore.html

Is more than halfway done. We'll have two more warm sunny days before the rain comes back, according to weather forecasts. I'll finish the tilling today and tomorrow morning I'll need to go out and run errands. Getting the garden ready one more time is a huge milestone in this life we lead here in the Loire Valley. Walt spent a lot of time repotting seedlings yesterday, so that they'll grow a little bigger before we set them out in the garden. I bet we have four dozen tomato plants at this point! Last we...

Living the life in Saint-Aignan: A dog's life, or une vie de chien ?

http://ckenb.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-dogs-life-or-une-vie-de-chien.html

A dog's life, or une vie de chien. If somebody says to you "it's a dog's life", what do you understand? Is the reference to a working dog that has to sleep outside, eat scraps, and work hard to earn its keep? Or is the dog in question a pampered pet who's got it made, living a cushy, carefree existence? Below, Callie is not unconscious, by the way. She's just lazing in the grass on a sunny afternoon (yesterday's). Is a miserable existence. Un temps de chien. Is really lousy weather. Un mal de chien.

Living the life in Saint-Aignan: A walk in New Bern

http://ckenb.blogspot.com/2011/03/walk-in-new-bern.html

A walk in New Bern. On Friday afternoon my sister and I took a drive up to New Bern. It's about 35 miles from the town where we both grew up. New Bern is the second oldest town in North Carolina — it was setteled in 1710. The population now is about 30,000. The town is located at the confluence of two rivers, the Neuse (pronounced as "noose") and the Trent. Old houses in New Bern's historic district. I liked this courtyard paved with bricks. We noticed these turkey vultures on the town's riverfront walk.

Living the life in Saint-Aignan: The stove saga

http://ckenb.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-stove-saga.html

Problem is, the Supra stoves that we like are slightly too big to fit inside our fireplace. And we don't want to have the fireplace torn out, as both the Invicta and Supra people have proposed as part of the deal. We like the look of our tufa-stone cheminée. It was one of the things we found attractive about the house when we bought it 12 years ago, and when you start tearing things out in an old house you never know what extra problems and expenses you might be signing up for. 09 May, 2015 09:03. Living the life in Saint-Aignan

Saint-Léon et le Puy Saint-Ambroise. It was March 6, our first full day on the car trip we took over to the old Bourbonnais province in central France earlier this month. After our walk around in the town of Lapalisse under the shut-tight 16th century Château de La Palice, we drove north through Jaligny. And on to Saint-Léon, basically down the valley of the Besbre River. Saint-Léon (pop. 601) has — surprise! Is by definition a settlement that includes a church — no church, no village. Back at the gîte.
