Yellowwood: September 2008
http://cladrastis.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Monday, September 29, 2008. Martha's celebration of life was Friday night. Something like 12 ONE. Saturday night we had our new members party. A lot of us became members over the summer (with the institution of the community membership), but we had to wait a while for the celebration. the timing ended up a bit strange given what we were doing the day before. then again maybe we needed the party even more. Members get purple t-shirts. Thursday, September 25, 2008. Monday, September 22, 2008. Unfortunately...
Yellowwood: February 2008
http://cladrastis.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html
Wednesday, February 27, 2008. Thursday, February 21, 2008. Matt called Lilith a "Ring of Fur" in a Johnny Cash voice. The Ring of Fur. Here are my Lyrics:. Lilith Is A Furry Thing. And she Makes A Furry Ring. Curling round she will purr. She Becomes A Ring Of Fur. I sat down with a Purring Ring Of Fur. I sat Down, Down, Down. And The Purr Went Higher. And she Purrs, Purrs, Purrs. The Ring Of Fur. The Ring Of Fur. I sat down with a Purring Ring Of Fur. I sat Down, Down, Down. And The Purr Went Higher.
Yellowwood: October 2007
http://cladrastis.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html
Wednesday, October 31, 2007. I heard a train horn before I got up this morning. There is something about that sound that instantly transports me to my hometown (Minot, ND). From my bed, I can hear it echoing in the distance in just the same way that I used to hear it from my bed in my parents' house. With my eyes closed, I can travel through time. Friday, October 26, 2007. In the fall of 2005, after Matt and I bought our home, we planted a Yellowwood tree (Cladrastis kentukea) together.

Yellowwood: January 2008

Tuesday, January 29, 2008. A week ago, I skipped my Taiko class. Because I was sick, and because the next day was the last day of the Organic Land Care Course. That I was taking from NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Association). Instead of engaging in fun and vigorous drumming, I stayed home curled up under a bunch of blankets and a cat (Peanut), and reviewed the course materials. And I felt pretty good about how I did. Today, I feel really good about the results:. Well, I'll probably catch up. Peanut an...

The Software Grove: December 2009

Monday, December 28, 2009. Handy But Hidden: Collections.newSetFromMap(). I was reminded again today of how much the core Java libraries have grown over the years. It can be really hard to keep track of all the nice little features that get added in each release. Today, I was wishing that there was a ConcurrentHashSet class or some other HashSet-style concurrent collection. Before implementing something myself, I did some searching on Google and found a nice way. Posted by Matt Passell. Traditional da...

Saturday, June 27, 2009. Embedded Groovy as an Application Extension Language. I recently worked with my client to add an extension mechanism (in this case, a very simple plug-in system) to their intranet Java web application. It's initially meant for use by professional services staff and possibly other advanced users in the future. Our first thought was to go with JavaScript. Via the Java Scripting API. GroovyClassLoader loader = new GroovyClassLoader(getClass().getClassLoader() ;. 160; It definitely...

http://blog.grovehillsoftware.com/2010/10/is-xmarks-dying-or-not.html
Monday, October 4, 2010. Is Xmarks Dying or Not? Early this year, I made the switch from Google Bookmarks. I've been really happy with Xmarks and have used it to sync the bookmarks and open tabs in Firefox. And IE on Windows and Firefox, Chrome, and Safari on Mac OS. They had plans for an Android client which I would have installed the moment it was released. Unfortunately, the company announced on September 27th that they'd be discontinuing the service. Monday, March 8, 2010. Thursday, April 9, 2009. Lovely Day for a Butterfly. Mourning Cloak Butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa). Sunning itself on my deck railing. Matt reported to me that Lilith chased a butterfly this morning. I guess being outside in nice spring weather brought out her inner hunter. The butterfly escaped unharmed, and I found it later, sipping nectar from my Andromeda ( Pieris sp. Mourning Cloak Butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa). On an Andromeda (Pieris sp.).
