Rough New Prizes: Work, etc.
http://claireduffett.blogspot.com/2009/04/work-etc.html
I like to pretend my life is like a Walt Whitman poem. Saturday, April 4, 2009. My posting frequency has been abysmal. My excuse is that I spend my days working.slowly. Since I'm perpetually overheated, it takes me three times longer to accomplish anything here than it did in go-go-go New York City. The only thing slower than my pace is the Cambodian internet connection. This week, I spent my days trekking 45 minutes to and from the Khmer Rouge courthouse. I had a story in GlobalPost. Happy Khmer New Year.
Rough New Prizes: January 2009

I like to pretend my life is like a Walt Whitman poem. Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Beautiful Khmer women and the men who exploit them. Ubiquitous sights in Asia include motorbike drivers in surgical masks, face moles with hairs measuring several inches, and pot-bellied white men in stained t-shirts and man-sandals holding hands and walking beside beautiful Asian women (or girls) wearing short skirts and sad, vacant expressions. Now, the idea that a great relationship comes out of a “deep, meaningf...
Rough New Prizes: December 2008
http://claireduffett.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
I like to pretend my life is like a Walt Whitman poem. Thursday, December 25, 2008. Someone else once spent his Christmas in Cambodia. It was John Kerry, and his holiday memories are the reason he lost the 2004 presidential election and stuck us with a bonus four years of George W. Bush:. I spent my first Christmas in Cambodia exactly forty years after Kerry did (or didn’t, depending who you believe). Thankfully, there are no bullets flying past my head. The country is at peace, though only...I spent the...
Rough New Prizes: Vietnam by train: part 1
http://claireduffett.blogspot.com/2009/02/vietnam-by-train-part-1.html
I like to pretend my life is like a Walt Whitman poem. Tuesday, February 3, 2009. Vietnam by train: part 1. Spoiled travelers around these parts often complain of desensitization. I still generally find myself in awe of the world and want to keep it that way. Still, I bet even the most seasoned whiners in Southeast Asia cannot deny the beauty of Hanoi. Although I'm sure they'll whine about all the hostels there these days. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.
Rough New Prizes: April 2009

I like to pretend my life is like a Walt Whitman poem. Sunday, April 26, 2009. Happy Khmer New Year. Hundreds of people crowded into the main temple, which is a massive, bare cement building still under construction. Others wandered around the grounds outside, buying snacks from food vendors and plastic toys from peddlers. At lunchtime, we gathered under a shelter, sitting cross-legged on the tile floor, and feasted on dishes brought by San's family, as well as uneaten leftovers of dishes given to the mo...

Sand in My Shoes: April 2009

Sand in My Shoes. How does sand get stuck in flip-flops? Thursday, April 23, 2009. Easter at the Orphanage. I may have spent Easter in Luderitz, but that didn't mean the kids at Sunrise Center went without a holiday-themed project. My mom, who used to be a kindergarten teacher, sent all the art supplies (as well as jellybeans, Peeps and cupcake mix) to create Easter chicks. Katrina helped with giving instructions and as usual, the kids went wild. David Hard at Work. Happiness Showing Off His Work. The to...

Sand in My Shoes: An Incredible Journey-Cape Town
http://jillnawrocki.blogspot.com/2009/12/incredible-journey-cape-town.html
Sand in My Shoes. How does sand get stuck in flip-flops? Wednesday, December 23, 2009. An Incredible Journey-Cape Town. Rachel and I had already been to Cape Town, but that didn't make our second visit any less fantastic. That's because this cosmopolitan town had plenty to keep us busy and loads of delicious food for us to eat. (I had nachos twice in one day! The Streets of Cape Town. The Birthday Dinner Crew. Early World Cup Prep. Was held captive for 27 years. I'd read his book, Long Walk to Freedom.
Sand in My Shoes: August 2009

Sand in My Shoes. How does sand get stuck in flip-flops? Tuesday, August 18, 2009. Life here can be stressful (especially when the government issues an order for all of its cars to be serviced the week they're supposed. To be transporting learners to Camp GLOW). But that just means the little things- things that I may have overlooked in a previous life- end up meaning a whole lot more now. The tiny note made me smile. My own Western Union. My personal pony express. Only this one was a whole lot more fun.

Sand in My Shoes. How does sand get stuck in flip-flops? Monday, July 27, 2009. Keeping Kids Warm in Winter. Winter may be nearly over, but I doubt the kids at Sunrise Center much cared. When I delivered hats and scarves made by me and my knitting group (thanks to yarn donations from friends and family back home), they were so excited. They bounced around cheering, and fingered the brightly colored yarns. They swapped pink scarves with blue and eagerly bundled up for this photo:. Posted by Jill N. Campai...

Sand in My Shoes: An Incredible Journey-And We're Off!
http://jillnawrocki.blogspot.com/2009/12/incredible-journey-take-one.html
Sand in My Shoes. How does sand get stuck in flip-flops? Thursday, December 17, 2009. An Incredible Journey-And We're Off! Today marked the start of two incredible journeys. The first, our lives as Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs). The second, a five-month journey through South Africa, Egypt, India and Southeast Asia with Rachel,. Our drop spot just beyond Windhoek city limits was a pretty poor one, and we waited nearly two hours for our first pick up: A guy who was only going as far as Rehoboth.

Sand in My Shoes. How does sand get stuck in flip-flops? Saturday, February 28, 2009. Just a Toothbrush: Anker.Finally. Despite the initial transport woes. My first farm school outreach with our dentist (Isabel) and her assistant (Lorain) was a huge. Doing workshops on my own was fun. I loved working the kids and watching them get excited about health. But seeing these two women at work- their enthusiasm and their passion- was truly inspiring. And not just for me. Isabel with the Grade 7s. Camp GLOW is a...

Audio ⁄ video. Welcome to the website of baroque violinist Claire Duff. Duff was at her best in two highly individual and unpredictable sonatas by JH Schmeltzer and Heinrich Biber, turning their schizophrenic idiom into something variegated, surprising and spontaneous.'. All three movements had virtuosity of a profoundly musical kind.'. The sound quality, precision and shaping of the string playing was outstanding'. More about Claire ».

I like to pretend my life is like a Walt Whitman poem. Friday, June 12, 2009. About illegal logging and poaching. We ate a hardy meal made from meat and vegetables packed in our guide’s backpack, I slipped myself a Dramamine to counteract the discomfort of sleeping with my feet pointing up and the nerves of the following day’s challenge. I thought. No, our guide told us the next morning. Giant bamboo rats were foraging for food. Sunday, April 26, 2009. Happy Khmer New Year. At lunchtime, we gathered unde...

Thursday, June 07, 2007. Heading out onto the streets of Zagreb, armed with a map from the hotel reception on which the receptionist had kindly highlighted our route towards the Old Town, the first thing that struck me was how quiet it was. This was around 10pm on a Saturday night: I am used to most cities buzzing at that time. I should say that I find most. After passing some gardens - that's another point, it smelled lovely! Well two old men anyway! It was just wonderful. Monday, June 04, 2007. Taxi dr...
