Textile Alchemy: August 2014

https://claireketteman.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, 17 August 2014. Inspiration on a plate. Who would have thought that the remains of a lazy lunch in the sunshine could provide such a rich source of inspiration? A mezze dish of green beans and tomatoes left beautiful pools of oil on my plate - I just had to draw it. And then turn it into stitch. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Inspiration on a plate. A bit of a strange mix! I trained as a scientist but I'm happy pursuing my new career in textile art. View my complete profile.

Textile Alchemy: July 2014

https://claireketteman.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, 31 July 2014. Last week (although it seems a million miles away now I'm on holiday) I did a mini workshop led by Claire Hignett. It was a back to basics. Lesson in drawing, but in particular, learning how to switch off your mind and draw what you see. For me, the warm up exercises were the most telling. We were asked to sign our name and then produce a mirror image. Easy! Is there. I fell into the trap and produced a copy rather than the required mirror image. Lesson learned. Links to this post.

Textile Alchemy: January 2015

https://claireketteman.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Monday, 26 January 2015. No chance of the January blues when these little beauties are there to greet me every morning! I love hyacinths but they don't like the heat and quickly bolt when kept indoors. I've discovered that the secret to keeping them strong, healthy and deliciously fragrant is a very cool, North-facing windowsill. Their colour is rather illusive; is it blue or purple? Textile Alchemy: May 2015

https://claireketteman.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Friday, 22 May 2015. Last week I spent three blissful days in Grassington at the Stitching in the Dales course run by the local Embroiderers' Guild. Our tutor was Kate Stewart and she led us on a painterly journey of stitched landscapes using transparent fabrics. Links to this post. Friday, 15 May 2015. Perhaps not the most popular item of clothing for May but I do live in Yorkshire! They are made using Rowan Yarns Kidsilk Haze. Links to this post. Monday, 11 May 2015. Textile Alchemy: April 2015

https://claireketteman.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Friday, 24 April 2015. Remember the little fabric books that are given to very young children? Well I've adapted the idea to make a sample book of stitches for a taster workshop that I'm doing at The Stitch Society pop up shop on Saturday 25th April. I will be demonstrating how to make my stitched cards but I thought the sampler concept would be a good introduction to being more creative with embroidery - no crinoline ladies in sight! The book makes a good reference source for future projects.

Yarn from Florence or Italian Sunshine for the Winter « The Sheep in the Looking-Glass

The Sheep in the Looking-Glass. Mostly about knitting, with a bit about knitting in history. Yarn from Florence or Italian Sunshine for the Winter. April 18, 2013. On holiday in Florence last summer I left the well trodden tourist streets to visit the yarn store Campolmi Roberto Filati. There was a display of small samples each shown in just one colour, and I was a bit discouraged. I like to be able to squish and muse. The yellow was the first onto the needles. I had no information about the yarn&#46...

The Sheep in the Looking-Glass. Mostly about knitting, with a bit about knitting in history. Stash Enhancements from Die Woll-Lust. July 16, 2013. I said I would show and tell from my visit to Die Woll-Lust. On my trip to Berlin. One of the things I particularly liked about the shop was the way the colours were arranged. Everywhere I looked there were enticing juxtapositions of colours. I was drawn to these gorgeous hanks of Filace Seta Cash. In shades of mauves and greys. This yarn, Filace Setmo. It&#82...

In an earlier post I wrote about buying yarn in Florence. I’ve just spent five days on a short holiday in Berlin and although I spent most of my time in the fabulous museums and art galleries (and the fassbender and rausch. Aren’t these gorgeous? A clever touch – there is a comfortable bench outside to park waiting spouses! What a lovely store!

The Sheep in the Looking-Glass. Mostly about knitting, with a bit about knitting in history. Knitting in History – Victorian Baby’s Sock 5. May 13, 2013. Well, it’s finished. What have I learnt from this test of a design published in 1880? This design is quite sweet but I think a similar effect could be achieved more simply. The stitched on lace border is charming – see my previous post for instructions – BUT the seam around the leg is quite clumsy. May 5, 2013. The middle example in pink is Orkney Angora.

Are such an innovative bunch. Not only do they hold inspiring workshops and textile study days, they have cunning plan to use the historic collections to inspire new designs for knitting and crotchet patterns. They included Debbie Bliss. Who turned out to have a quietly wicked sense of humour and Kate Davies.
