Teaching 3-13 year old's who cant really speak English can be incredibly challenging - but not without its laughs and rewards. Sometimes when things are lost in translation - it makes for a pretty funny moment. Especially when it eventually dawns on you what the child is trying to tell you! The 5th graders. They have matching "Love Nambu" t-shirts for sports day. The photo I used to explain "Don't sleep late". Although when I reply he doesn't actually understand how I am so its a bit of a deflated victor...

Winter seems to have finally hit Yeongju. Woke up to a text from Norah this morning that said "Have you looked outside? Being the mature 23 year old that I am. I flew out of bed, ran down the stairs to the bottom floor of our apartment block with no shoes on and smiled in awe at the first falling snow I have ever seen in my life. I caught myself mid clap and realized I must look completely ridiculous trying to catch snow with my bare fingers in a super girl nightie and pink sleeping shorts. The whole cla...

Recently, EPIK (the organisation I work for) offered to take 70 native teachers working in our province, on a visit to see Dok-do island. I jumped at the offer of three days off work, a chance to socialize with other teachers, as well as an opportunity to see the highly disputed strip of land for myself. Dok-do island. A view from the jetty. Ulleong-do. Below is a view of the small town as well as one of the very few elementary schools. They cant have it! So the big question: Does Dok-do belong to Korea?

This weekend I went up to Seoul to visit Everland. It is one of Korea's theme parks (a bit like Disney land). The entrance to Everland. Behind this is what feels like a big castle. Not a thing is out of place. The real flowers are immaculate, all over the park . For those who want to visit- its really easy to take a shuttle 6000 a way. It leaves from Seoul city hall, just off the subway. It makes getting to Everland about an hours journey). The entrance to the T-Express rollercoaster. As if I'm not odd a...

Holiday Food | Keen For Korea

In the days leading up to leaving, I have spent my mini vacation eating my way through all that Korea has to offer. Here's a look at some of the delicious food Ive managed to shovel down with delight. Not quite Korean - rather a Japanese inspired side dish. Tempura fried shrimp with a little side salad. They were delicious and surprisingly ungreasy. Sushi platter. Another Japanese dish- The salmon was so fresh and well prepared. Last but not least, what to do when you have a bit of a hangover? A blog abo...

For anyone who has spent even a limited amount of time in Korea, it is a well known fact that Soju (an alcoholic rice wine) is a household staple and much loved choice of drink for patriotic Koreans everywhere. I personally have spent many a Saturday morning, feeling like the soju shots on Friday night, often in the double digits, weren't really worth my proceeding pounding headache. Yet is it worth all the hype? The different Soju flavours. Original, Citron, Pomegranate, Peach and Blueberry. A sugary Ko...

I never thought I would be scared of little old ladies. But Korean little old ladies play on a totally different level to your sweet old nana at home. My concept of old people has been limited to crocheting and Mint Imperials. Not these women! They are capable of retaining the fear of many. Frankly, I am much more scared of the lady who sits outside the GS24 (convenience store), than I am of my principal. For everyone who doesn't know, an Ajumma loosely refers to an older lady in Korea. I hope they win:.

Recently a few of the teachers from my town took a trip to Dangyang. It is a small town about half an hour outside of Yeongju. Out of the many places I have visited in Korea, I will say that Dangyang is the most picturesque. The town is built on the side of a mountain, running along the Namhan river. As it was the middle of spring, vibrant purple and yellow flowers lined the sidewalks while new greens leaves blanketed the previously bare mountains. I had originally thought that the caves would be a quick...
