Claire's Crafts

Wednesday, 15 January 2014. Crochet Necklace with button and sequens jewel effect. I love this making these, so much so that this is the latest present I make for my girly friends to go with their birthday cards. I like to use pearlised cotton to crochet with and adding a few sequins over the button stitching to add a little bit of sparkle or you can just add a pretty button you have going spare in your button jar. Tuesday, 14 January 2014. Scarves for the boys (Rowan cashsoft). Woolly hat for hubby (Row...

Claire's Crafts: January 2012

http://www.clairescraft.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 31 January 2012. I love this bag, so much so that it got quite worn to the extent that it started to get a big hole on the back. I started off by fixing it and patching up the hole with a brown piece of cloth. Originally the back was green material like the handle you can see so it was all khaki green with a brown patch in the middle about 10cm x 10cm. Not very glamorous! I'd seen a programme on appliqu. Labels: make do and mend. Location: 20, London Borough of Wandsworth, London SW18, UK. Idea ...

Claire's Crafts: November 2013

http://www.clairescraft.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Monday, 25 November 2013. Crochet Snowflake Christmas Decorations. Just learnt to make these snowflakes from a pattern in Mollie Makes Magazine. They are supposed to be the decoration for some gloves but I think they make great decorations for the Christmas Tree or maybe a snowflake garland. It's a treble round, and the icicle parts are 3 x chains together. I modified the pattern to make the chain in the middle to be 6 stitch chain in between two 4 stitch chains. Monday, 11 November 2013. Why not edge bo...

Claire's Crafts: My first dress - my wedding dress and the start of a sewing club

http://www.clairescraft.blogspot.com/2013/10/my-first-dress-my-wedding-dress-and.html

Saturday, 19 October 2013. My first dress - my wedding dress and the start of a sewing club. This summer marked the conclusion of my first dress pattern dress - my wedding dress. It was the most wonderful feeling walking around in a beautiful 50s dress that I'd made myself and for the fraction of the price of a typical wedding dress. In the autumn I started a sewing class where the project was a tote bag. I am still very proud of that tote bag with appliqué. And then. I was at the point where...For me I ...

Claire's Crafts: December 2012

http://www.clairescraft.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Monday, 31 December 2012. A touch of marcasite. I recently spotted this sweet silver marcasite brooch at a local antique fair. It's started a trend in my accessories repertoire and it brightens up the lapel on my suit no end. A touch of glammer in the office. I've also been wearing it with my woollens too. The marcasite happily glitters away and looks stunning on those dark, wintery colours. I fear I may be starting a brooch addiction and its all thanks to this little marcasite leaf! I thought it would b...

Claire's Culinary Adventures: End of season nasturtium pesto

http://clairesculinaryadventures.blogspot.com/2012/11/end-of-season-nasturtium-pesto.html

Cooking inspired by growing food in the garden. Wednesday, 28 November 2012. End of season nasturtium pesto. There's a big frost coming tonight, hopefully it will warm a little during the day tomorrow, but I fear its the last chance saloon for those yummy nasturtium leaves. I finished work at 4.15pm today so I thought if I hurry home I may be able to harvest those leaves in the light. Sadly it was dark by 4.45pm so it was a job to be done with my trusty head torch! Claire's Culinary Adventures: Preserving Foraged Fruits

http://clairesculinaryadventures.blogspot.com/2012/03/preserving-foraged-fruits.html

Cooking inspired by growing food in the garden. Monday, 19 March 2012. It might seem like a funny time of the year to be writing about this. Autumn and winter would be slightly more appropriate but I'm moving house in a few weeks and have been sorting out my freezer trying to use up those frozen foods before the big move to Birmingham. So yesterday I spent the day in my kitchen with these bubbling concoctions made from last autumn's foraged foods. Haw Berry Sauce (makes 300ml sauce). 500g elderberries, 5...

Claire's Culinary Adventures: Stuffed Gem Squash

http://clairesculinaryadventures.blogspot.com/2012/01/stuffed-gem-squash.html

Cooking inspired by growing food in the garden. Sunday, 8 January 2012. Do you remember the gem squash I grew in the garden last summer? Gem Squash - the intrepid explorer. Yesterday, I thought it was time to do my home grown gem squash justice and what a delicious dish it made. I just have to share it with you! As my boyfriend is lactose intolerant I stuffed his gem squash with my home grown Slow Roasted Tomatoes. Then I roasted them all in the oven for an hour at 180 degrees centigrade. Thanks Claire&#...

Claire's Culinary Adventures: May 2012

http://clairesculinaryadventures.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Cooking inspired by growing food in the garden. Wednesday, 9 May 2012. From day to day my sourdough starter went through various changes. As in the instructions I followed these were only described as lively and not so lively, I thought I would document them for any one else who wants to make their own starter and wants an indication of what to expect. The starter was really starting get very active by this time with masses of large bubbles a bit like the size of bubbles babies blow in the mouths. Th...

Claire's Culinary Adventures: January 2013

http://clairesculinaryadventures.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Cooking inspired by growing food in the garden. Tuesday, 1 January 2013. I think some of our most amazing meals come from giving leftovers a second lease of life. When we had loads of leftover roast veg, stuffing and crispy bacon from our Christmas meal, I made these. Roast in the oven (about 180 degrees or gas mark 6) for about 20 mins and hey presto, some great picnic food or a great veg accompaniment to a meal. You can turn left overs into something really delicious. Links to this post. It might seem ...

Claire's Culinary Adventures: Pickled Nasturtium Seeds

http://clairesculinaryadventures.blogspot.com/2011/08/pickled-nasturtium-seeds.html

Cooking inspired by growing food in the garden. Friday, 12 August 2011. Nasturtiums have really brightened up my summer salads this year with their peppery leaves. I think I'm hooked! If you haven't tried these flavourful leaves I highly recommend you try them. Nasturtiums are in the same family as water cress. And in my garden and my community gardens right now, the nasturtiums are growing thick and strong in great clumps with their cheerful yellow and red flowers in all their different varieties. Then ...

Claire's Culinary Adventures: October 2012

http://clairesculinaryadventures.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Cooking inspired by growing food in the garden. Saturday, 20 October 2012. It's Saturday morning, had my lie in and then started to feel a little peckish. Wandered downstairs and fancied something a little different and decadent. There was no crumble left :( which is my usual decadent (if a little naughty) breakfast with minimum effort! Bashed the frozen bag a little to loosen up a few blackberries and tossed them into the bowl with a few spoonfuls of porridge oats and some milk. Links to this post.

Claire's Culinary Adventures: October 2011

http://clairesculinaryadventures.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Cooking inspired by growing food in the garden. Friday, 14 October 2011. This is my all time favourite way to preserve tomatoes. I do it every year without fail. I love the way the slow roasting intensifies the sweet flavour of the fresh out of the garden tomatoes and then you've trapped that sweetness in a jar ready to brighten up the speediest of meals through the winter months. They are always such a treat. 12 tomatoes / 500g will fill a standard jam jar. 4 Allow the tomatoes to cool. 8 Label your jar...

Claire's Culinary Adventures: April 2012

http://clairesculinaryadventures.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Cooking inspired by growing food in the garden. Wednesday, 18 April 2012. My first sourdough starter. I've decided that now is the time to start my very own sour dough starter. Hopefully this will be a start of a very long relationship! I've started it with 100g of flour (mixture of spelt and mixed grain flour) and roughly the same amount of luke warm water. I whisked the mixture until it looked the same consistency as pancake batter and put cling film over the top of the bowl. Links to this post. I smea...

Claire's Culinary Adventures: June 2012

http://clairesculinaryadventures.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Cooking inspired by growing food in the garden. Sunday, 17 June 2012. When I left my last garden, I wasn't sure whether to take my garlic with me or do something culinary with it. For the sake of easing our muscles in a very long distance move I opted for the culinary. (It also looked like one bulb had been taken by white rot). 50g garlic shoots, bulbs - anything that looks fresh on the garlic plants. 50 ml Lemon/Lime juice. 150 ml Rapeseed Oil. Links to this post.
