Clara's Window: Hacking other people's recipes
http://claraswindow.blogspot.com/2014/04/hacking-other-peoples-recipes.html
Tuesday, April 15, 2014. Hacking other people's recipes. Yesterday just had that vibe, you know? That overwhelming combination of fatigue and distraction, an inability to concentrate that makes you useless for much more than making lists and doing stupid data entry. So I took myself out for lunch. At the next table, a woman stopped chewing just long enough to pull out her phone and call another restaurant to order nachos to go. "No sour cream, double cheese, please.". I wanted to say, "You too, huh?
Clara's Window: the world's greatest buttermilk biscuits
http://claraswindow.blogspot.com/2009/05/world-greatest-buttermilk-biscuits.html
Thursday, May 28, 2009. The worlds greatest buttermilk biscuits. On this weekend's menu. Originally uploaded by norvegal. Seeing as we've become the bestest of friends, and seeing as another weekend is almost upon us, I thought it my duty to share with you The World's Greatest Buttermilk Biscuit Recipe. This recipe comes from Susan Wyler's Cooking from a Country Farmhouse. Now, sift together 1 cup flour (all-purpose is fine), 1 tsp baking powder, 1/4 tsp baking soda, and a wee pinch of salt. In the bakin...
Clara's Window: Seventeen Years
http://claraswindow.blogspot.com/2015/05/seventeen-years.html
Friday, May 22, 2015. Seventeen years ago this week, we crossed the bridge into Maine and began our new life. That number seems surreal to me, both a blink of an eye and multiple lifetimes. I remember, in my 20s, zoning out when someone began a sentence with "17 years ago." That was, like, so irrelevant to now. Two years later that very same month, I got an idea to start an online knitting magazine all about yarn. I bought the domain "knittersreview.com" and started working on the logo and layout...Blink...
Clara's Window
http://claraswindow.blogspot.com/2004/12/my-grandma-loved-to-bake-during.html
Tuesday, December 14, 2004. My grandma loved to bake during the holidays, which makes this one of my favorite times of year. After we moved to Arizona, we didn't get to spend as many holidays with my grandma, but that didn't stop her from baking. Every year, she'd send a huge, heavy box filled with tins of cookies and cakes. One bite and I was instantly with her again. Cream together 1/2 cup shortening. I use butter) and 1 cup brown sugar. Add 1 well-beaten egg. Sift together 2 1/2-cups flour. Immediatel...
Clara's Window: I've Missed You
http://claraswindow.blogspot.com/2015/05/ive-missed-you.html
Friday, May 15, 2015. I have a notebook I bought on 24th Street, back when I lived in San Francisco. My first entry was dated some time in 1995, right before Clare and I moved in together, after I'd left my travel writing job and was struggling to find my way in high-tech. Returning to this blog after a little more than a year, it feels like opening that notebook and reading the last entry. I'm glad it had to do with that chowder, because it remains one of my favorite go-to recipes. I made some j...In 20...

Clara's Window
Friday, October 16, 2015. We are a one-car family. Any time work calls me to destinations within a drivable distance, I just walk over to Congress Street and down towards Deering Oaks Park, past the imposing main post office to the Enterprise rental car office. I was doing this yesterday in preparation for my annual trek to the NY Sheep and Wool Festival at Rhinebeck. This year's car rental was a little more tricky because I needed a vehicle big enough to accommodate a rowing machine. All at the same time.
Clara's Wish
Tuesday, July 28, 2015. A Long Overdue Thank You! Seriously yummy cookies. My skirts got tight over the four days we spent with her! Worth every pound. Just sayin', if you ever get the chance you want to spend some time with our renowned Cat! I remember Cat answering a question about how she relieved stress. She said she baked bread and shot her gun. Got to do the latter with her also. I have never in my life shot a gun until I visited Cat. She's right! Have you heard of Cat's shoe collection? So, I aske...
