Oranges and Lemons - Cynara de Goutiere, artist in Cobble Hill

Artist, cobble hill bc. Maybe it’s our Pacific Northwest winters – gray, gray, gray, with occasional teasers of sparkly bright hoarfrost days. Maybe it’s the old National Geographic article I’ve been reading about shipwreck treasure and the crew’s likely demise from scurvy,. Or just because I’m an incorrigible colour hound and can’t get enough of these happy colours…. Or because I’m trying to make room in my studio! A fabulous book which explores the infinite possibilities of four shaft weaves.

Artist, cobble hill bc. Archive for February, 2012. February 22nd, 2012 Posted 4:55 pm. On the loom, a run of runners. Summer and winter, Diamond and Block pattern, Threading #2, from Marguerite Davison’s Handweaver’s Pattern Book. Interesting preamble to the Chapter, on the origins of the weave which were traditionally credited to both Pennsylvania Dutch, and the Finnish. My tie-up is reversed on my counterbalance, so I’m enjoying the summer side of this weave, with its flowers instead of diamonds.

Spinning and Weaving - Cynara de Goutiere, artist in Cobble Hill

Artist, cobble hill bc. This is a bit archival now, but joyful to recall return to fibers a few years ago – my rickety loom newly rebuilt, and the Indian Head spinner brought out of the dust. Fiber flying, dyepots a-stewing, shuttle flying, grandson’s toes sweetly curling…. Handspun lincoln, brazilwood and goldenrod dye. This loom which followed me around for 35 years, largely serving as a coat rack and mechanized play fort for my children, was dusted off, stripped, re-assembled and put in working order.

Artist, cobble hill bc. I love how colours working together as light are quite different than had they been puddled together into solid pigment. Here is the Oranges and Lemons warp of the previous two posts with a new weft – predominantly brick-rose. My last table runner off the loom last week glows against the soft white of Rachelle Chinnery. 8216;s sculpted teapot and cups. And instead of long thrums - a small bread cloth.
