Down by the River: May 2014

Wednesday, 7 May 2014. False Starts - River Usk and River Taff, April 2014. What a Difference a Day Makes. Bryn Derwen, River Usk, 12th and 13th April. It was Saturday morning. I had grilled a few cuts of Raglan pig and was relieved when Welsh exile and itinerant angler, Morgan, arrived on time. We had not fished the new beat together and, even though the river was up 15cm and (worse) there was a stiff easterly wind, I was eager to get out. 17 inch Bryn Derwen trout. Deep wading reaps rewards. Morgan is ...

Down by the River: Resurrection – March Browns, River Usk
http://downbytheriverflyfishing.blogspot.com/2015/06/resurrection-march-browns-river-usk.html
Friday, 5 June 2015. Resurrection – March Browns, River Usk. At the risk of repeating myself, it’s been a while since my last entry. Short on time, I've been forced to make the choice between fishing, tying flies and blogging - my fly boxes are also sparsely populated at the moment. Early riser: LDO feeder. Large Dark Olives (LDOs) have been less prolific in the last few years, but the March Brown (MB) hatch has steadily improved. Most sustained LDO feeders were witnessed on drizzly, windless afterno...

Down by the River: January 2014
http://downbytheriverflyfishing.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Monday, 20 January 2014. Domestic Bliss, River Taff, January 2014. It was Saturday night and a text from Dan Popp indicated that the lower Taff would be fishable the following day. I needed no persuasion as the local rivers had been in spate since November. We arranged to meet the next morning at nine. At the pool Dan went straight to his favourite spot and I entered the river downstream where I caught, and missed, more small grayling on my heavy bugs. The river is currently stuffed with these 4-5 in...

Down by the River: August 2014

Friday, 1 August 2014. End of the Day - River Usk, Summer 2014. Despite maintaining good levels for the first half of the season, the Usk catchment has not received significant rainfall since late May and the bones of the river are on display. Hot dry spells dictate that I fish mainly in the relative cool of the late evening, or early morning. A busy work life, a dislike of most TV programmes and close proximity to the river results in many summer evenings spent fishing. Kris Kent - big man, small trout.

Small Stream Addicts: March 2015
http://smallstreamaddicts.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, 22 March 2015. There was no fly life at this stage around 09:30 in the morning but managed a good couple off fish to the nymph/Dink before a good hatch of LDO's came off at around 11:00. I then switched over to my favored LDO/Large Dark Olive pattern as the fish were looking up and taking the flies off the surface quite confidently. Hook - Hayabusa 383 size 16. Tail - brown hen hackle. Body - olive superfine dubbing. Thorax - hares ear. Wing - 4/5 cdc feathers. Sunday, 8 March 2015.

8230;still wondering why fishing is so addictive! Tag Archives: kamasan B270. March 17, 2014. All in a day’s tying…. Well, one Saturday I popped down to my local tackle shop and fly tying emporium Harvey Angling. I only needed a couple of things but the shop is so well stocked that retail therapy in a well stocked fly tying department is highly cathartic; food for the soul especially when you can’t get out fishing! I just can’t help myself sometimes. So what was I tying? Call them what you will, variatio...

Down by the River: July 2013

Wednesday, 24 July 2013. Double Take - Mayfly, River Usk, June 2013. As everything on the Usk is three weeks late this year, I had some good sport with mayfly feeding fish in the early part of June. During the last week in May, I noticed a few danica whilst out walking the dog. The specimen below landed on my dog's back, which was a bad move as she turned around and ate it! Beat at 7.00pm and was delighted to be greeted by clouds of dancing spinners. 65279;. Being a member of both GAS and MTAA. As I w...
