Peter Gleick covered this in an article published on Forbes [ LINK. Posted by .brian. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The WSJ op-ed page again. Union of Concerned Scientists.

Climate and climate change news and views. Comparing volcanic CO2 emissions to human-made emissions. There's a terrific article by T. Gerlach in last week's issue of AGU's EOS newspaper [ PDF. Gerlach is apparently a volcanologist, not a climate scientist. The article compares estimates of CO2 emission by volcanic sources to human-made emissions. There is a common misconception (I'm not sure how common) about the relative contributions of volcanos and humans to the emission of CO2. Posted by .brian.

Toxins on the slopes. Every season, thousands upon thousands of kilograms of ski wax are applied to skis and snowboards. Beeswax, pine tar, the natural materials once used to wax or seal skis have long since fallen by the wayside. Nowadays, conventional ski wax is made from varying blends of low-grade paraffin and synthetic fluorine chemicals, and therein lurks the problem. Worse than low-grade hydrocarbons like paraffin, though, are PFCs (known as perfluorocompounds/perfluorochemicals) and FTOHs (fluoro...
