Closely Observed Train Stations

This blog owes a lot to Vanessa Berry's zine, Laughter and the Sound of Tea Cups and Lucas Ihlein's Petersham blog. Though I might not hit their artistic high notes, the aim is similar: to write a record of a very particular place at a particular time. Every Friday afternoon I will head to a (usually) random metro station and record what I see and feel there. So as the announcment goes: Ukončete výstup a nástup, dveře se zavírají.

Closely Observed Train Stations: January 2010

http://closelyobservedtrainstations.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 20 January 2010. I've got a letter to post. It's been sitting in my bag since before Christmas and it really should've been sent already. One of my colleagues said the nearest post office is near Pankrác and since I haven't done Pankrác I thought how convenient. Except I don't know where the post office is. The post office is off the block with the train station but I'm going to bend the rules since I don't think I've written about visiting a post office. I mentioned the GPO once. The other re...

Closely Observed Train Stations: September 2010

http://closelyobservedtrainstations.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, 2 September 2010. Hard to believe but after almost two years, it's over. My adventures around Prague's metro stations has come to an end. I reflected on this more last week and don't wish to rehash the recent past, especially when this stop proves to be one of the most interesting I've visited. Turn out to be quite large with a few kilometres of trails running through them. Today there were no such encounters. There were people picking mushrooms and I even stopped to have a look seeing as I...

Closely Observed Train Stations: Hloubětín

http://closelyobservedtrainstations.blogspot.com/2010/03/hloubetin.html

Tuesday, 9 March 2010. Though I've been curious about this station since I first saw it many years ago, I never succumbed enough to check it out over the years. The name has been the main reason. The names of most other stations are self-evident. This one is more impenetrable. The Czechs call this type of cold "kosa", which means scythe. Today, it's obvious to see why. The wind is slicing me to the bone. It's also going to trim today's post. I'm not sure how long I can stand to be outside. Through the se...

Closely Observed Train Stations: December 2009

http://closelyobservedtrainstations.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 8 December 2009. Hlavní nádraží Part Two. It's impossible to write about hlavní nádraží, or hlavák as the Praguers call it, without mentioning the people. The station is a confluence of visitors and locals, the transient and regulars, though who is who is usually a matter of perspective. Closely Observed Train Stations. Links to this post. Labels: disappointment with Prague. Prague Main Train Station. Monday, 7 December 2009. Hlavní Nádraží Part 1. One thing about construction is that it brings ...

Closely Observed Train Stations: April 2010

http://closelyobservedtrainstations.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Friday, 2 April 2010. NB This was written on 23rd March but I didn't have time to post until now.]. As a break with standard practice, I'm going to start as we pass through Střížkov. Which is two stops before Letňany. The newness of this station along with the next two makes me feel like I'm leaving the real world and entering a life-size model. It makes it hard to separate the stations from each other. We pass through Prosek. The rhyme goes like this:. Tři sta třicet tři. Tři sta třicet tři. Karel Pl&#6...

danmusic: Wonder Man

http://danmusic.blogspot.com/2008/01/wonder-man.html

Wednesday, January 9. I didn't mind. I read Straight Man first and enjoyed it so much (it is hilarious) that I wanted to read it again straight away (but for the first time). And, by reading Wonder Boys, I was able to satisfy this paradoxical urge. Posted by dan at 10:10 PM. I noticed the blog is having trouble with the danmusic.gif header - probably because Nicholas hosting site might be having issues. Closely Observed Train Stations. danmusic: The Yiddish Policemen's Union

http://danmusic.blogspot.com/2011/06/review-six-yiddish-policemens-union.html

Wednesday, June 15. The Yiddish Policemen's Union. Michael Chabon - 4 1/2 stars. Belated book review project explained here. I enjoyed the hell out of this book. I'm a sucker for the hard-boiled format in the hands of a good literary writer (e.g. Lethem's Gun With Occasional Music. And Amis's Night Train. Add a waterlogged Alaskan landscape and a likable tough guy for a protagonist and you've got something pretty close to my perfect book. Posted by dan at 11:35 PM. Closely Observed Train Stations.

http://danmusic.blogspot.com/2011/07/empire-falls.html

Saturday, July 9. Richard Russo - 3 1/2 stars. Belated book review project explained here. At this rate, I'm reviewing books slower than I am reading them and I still have about 65 to go before I catch up. I've read a couple of other Russo books since this one and they all kind of blend in together. As far as I can remember, this one was fine but I wouldn't recommend it. Is much funnier and is definitely worth reading. Posted by dan at 11:13 PM. Closely Observed Train Stations. Do Cats Eat Bats?

Sunday, February 29. MY FAVORITE EX-PATRIOT AUSTRALIAN. Mel Gibson’s fetishization of the violence suffered by Christ has made over 100 million dollars. In its first few days here in the US. Scary. I’m guessing that Mel is pretty glad he changed his mind and decided to add subtitles over the Aramaic. I’m thinking that the subtitleless version would have been less lucrative. Another choice Mel quote. A monkey has a better chance of typing the Gettysburg Address than Jesus has of not being the messiah....

danmusic: Review of Damned by Chuck Palahniuk

http://danmusic.blogspot.com/2012/01/review-of-damned-by-chuck-palahniuk.html

Monday, January 30. Review of Damned by Chuck Palahniuk. I'd never read Palahniuk before because I had been given the impression that his books were gimmicky and shallow. Boy was I was wrong. Gimmicky and shallow would be high praise for this pandering and meandering garbage. The satire is so trite that it makes Glenn Beck seem like a purveyor of subtle social commentary. And the book has the most ineptly handled final third and resolution that I have ever had the misfortune to read. Do Cats Eat Bats?
