Chris's Art in Africa Blog: Prompt for Oct.28 Response

Chris's Art in Africa Blog. Sunday, October 30, 2011. Prompt for Oct.28 Response. November 1, 2011 at 8:59 AM. I agree that it was very interesting how the African peoples mentioned incorporated the Europeans into their beliefs, as I wrote about the same in my blog. You described their beliefs that corresponded with the Europeans well. November 1, 2011 at 11:14 AM. How can you connect the perceptions of Sapi/Kongo/Beni people to the development of Mami Wata? Chris's Art in Africa Blog: Blog: Week 3

http://cniemandafrica.blogspot.com/2011/09/blog-week-3.html

Chris's Art in Africa Blog. Friday, September 9, 2011. This past week of class was a pretty fun one. Nani came yesterday and helped walk us through how to make batiks. Making batiks was a lot simpler process that I remember it being when I did them in a high school art class. Thats most likely because I paid attention more this time than I did in high school. I really liked Picton's argument against using the word traditional in his article we read for class. He argued that the word traditional.

Chris's Art in Africa Blog: The Haitian Relation to Africa Through Artwork

http://cniemandafrica.blogspot.com/2011/10/haitian-relation-to-africa-through.html

Chris's Art in Africa Blog. Thursday, October 13, 2011. The Haitian Relation to Africa Through Artwork. When the first slaves were brought over to the Americas, they brought their traditions with them. One of the first places the slaves where brought was what is now the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The slave culture of the island was a new hybrid, combining African and European influence to create Vodou. The art of Vodou is very similar to African art, yet it is still different. I like the idea you brou...

Chris's Art in Africa Blog: Nov. 4th Blog

http://cniemandafrica.blogspot.com/2011/11/nov-4th-blog.html

Chris's Art in Africa Blog. Thursday, November 3, 2011. There are many issues out there that drive contemporary artists crazy. Contemporary African artists have to deal with one issue in particular that gets under their skin. They don't like that most people are more interested in where they're from than the work they're producing. Their origins usually overshadow their contemporary artwork in the eyes of westerners. Nikki-Arts of Africa: November 2011

http://nikki-artsofaftica.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Friday, November 11, 2011. Artists vs. Individuality. Both articles consisted of sexual nature that creates both controversy and strong point that was established through these artworks and the artists’ ‘so-called’ identity. The point of this blog and much of the topic discussed, is that of the fact that stereotyping and assuming an identity of someone will never change no matter the artist or subject, because that is what we, as the audience and crowd are programmed to learn/know. What is there identity?

Nikki-Arts of Africa: Week 9 - African Connections

http://nikki-artsofaftica.blogspot.com/2011/10/week-9-african-connections.html

Friday, October 14, 2011. Week 9 - African Connections. There are many different routes one can take when connecting what is known already about African arts and what is continuing to be seen and read. One thing that I’ve realized and observed so far about African culture is how sacred the rituals and beliefs of certain societies are. Participants actually believe and/or mock the act of spirits coming to visit the ceremony which takes place by physically possessing individuals and speaking and acting thr...

Nikki-Arts of Africa: Contemporary Artist Controversies

http://nikki-artsofaftica.blogspot.com/2011/11/contemporary-artist-controversies.html

Thursday, November 3, 2011. In the third reading that was assigned, it was apparent how these artists confront assumptions and projections. It was evident that Ouattara became very frustrated quickly with the interviewer (Thomas McEvilley) asking questions such as, “Where did you grow up? 8221;, “Where did you go to school? 8221; and so on. Santoni simply wanted to talk about his art. Why is that important anyways? November 8, 2011 at 7:03 AM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). I'm currently a junior at...
