The CNNV consists of four major cores located at the University of Pittsburgh. And Thomas Jefferson University. Oversees all Center related activities. Particularly important aspects of its function are to ensure regulatory compliance in the distribution of reagent and to establish priorities for the development of the technology. The Technology and Research Core. Characterizes new strains of virus, trains investigators in the use of virul tracers, and conducts research to improve the technology.

The CNNV provides high titer, well-characterized strains of PRV, HSV-1, and rabies virus for circuit analysis. The tropism and invasiveness of each virus has been documented in published studies.
