ListenUpHearThis: April 2012
http://listenuphearthis.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
When you know better, you do better. -Maya Angelou. Sunday, April 22, 2012. My ears have been very sensitive to parents using an ugly, hateful tone of voice with their children lately. Is this happening more or am I just noticing it more? Either way, it is unacceptable to belittle, yell, curse, or otherwise verbally abuse children. Of course, we know better than to beat our kids, but what about the hurtful words we use? Aren't they just as damaging? Who the F#(@ you rollin' with? It takes time to build r...

ListenUpHearThis: January 2012
http://listenuphearthis.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
When you know better, you do better. -Maya Angelou. Wednesday, January 25, 2012. Happy Anniversary (to me). It has been one whole year since the cancer debacle. I don't have cancer, nor do I mean to make light of the disease in any way. This is the one year anniversary of being told that I AM a cancer. I was devastated. I came home crying the Ugly Cry and continued crying for about two days. I had never been spoken to like that EVER. I guess I am, but then again it affects me daily. How simple it sounded!

When you know better, you do better. -Maya Angelou. Thursday, June 30, 2011. Obstacles - just go! On the trail again today. I had to stop and laugh out loud when I had the following epiphany:. Obstacles on the trail eventually wear down, get pushed aside, decompose, rot OR someone comes along with a saw. This method of gradual erosion works on obstacles that are of the movable, flexible variety. I've noticed over the last couple years of using the trails, however, that more often than not when there's a ...

When you know better, you do better. -Maya Angelou. Thursday, June 28, 2012. Controversial' topic - breastfeeding! I have no idea why this is at all controversial actually. Humans are animals. Animals have babies. Babies must be fed. Conveniently, animals are well-equipped for such endeavors. Me nursing Maggie shortly after coming home. From the hospital. See? My son nursed all. the. time. No wonder - he would nurse forever and be completely full, hence projectile spit up! The pain is indescribable. ...

When you know better, you do better. -Maya Angelou. Wednesday, September 5, 2012. Teachers, Believe in each other, plz! I woke up before my alarm this morning (thanks to flappy dachshund ears). Instead of working out I decided to catch up on my dvr'd Oprah. I watched the Life Class she co-hosted with Iyanla Vanzant. The topic was "Terrible Things Women Do to Each Other" - a fantastic episode that was way too short, in my opinion. Any bells ringing for anyone already? How Iyanla Defines Gossip:. Usually s...

ListenUpHearThis: Teachers Write, Day Two - Seeing through a child's eyes

When you know better, you do better. -Maya Angelou. Tuesday, July 8, 2014. Teachers Write, Day Two - Seeing through a child's eyes. Today's assignment is to take an event from childhood and write about it. I chose something that happened to me in elementary school. A class at my elementary school.see the doors? Every classroom had 2 that opened directly outside! I avoid the largest cracks in the pavement to save my mother from back aches. I'm a good kid. The playground between the third grade wing and li...

When you know better, you do better. -Maya Angelou. Wednesday, June 5, 2013. I Can Haz a Bike? Prequel to A Lesson in Biking). My Sweet New Ride. I recently bought a bike, and, although I’d ridden bikes over the years, my most recent experience was mostly on those cruddy, non-geared “beach cruisers”. In fact, I hadn't had a 10 speed since I was in 5. Grade and my best friend bequeathed hers to me upon moving to another state….over 30 years ago! Where does the time go? I hopped on one afternoon in my driv...

When you know better, you do better. -Maya Angelou. Friday, July 29, 2011. Why I was a Crappy Friend. As I drove home from attending two days of an education technology conference, I reflected on my time spent with friends this week. I worked at the registration table each morning and it was a joy to see so many friends - old and new - pass by. Last year was a hard year for me. I'd lost my teaching mojo. But through this experience I have grown. Flashforward to this week - I had lunch with a bestest team...
