Still Booming

http://coalmont.mozey-on-inn.com/photos5.html

Main Street of Coalmont during the boom times. In the foreground, the Coalmont Hotel (which has operated nearly continuously ever since), next was the Royal Bank, beside that the Canadian Legion (which was formerly a Store), and in the distance was likely Doctor Sheffield's house. Note the raised boardwalks and dirt roads. Photo ca.1930s from the Provincial Archives of B.C. Rear view of the Coalmont Hotel and the Royal Bank in 1933, with Dave Brown in his pedal car. In The Beginning...

http://coalmont.mozey-on-inn.com/photos1.html

This photo from about 1910, shows the Compressor Building for the Columbia Coal and Coke Company, located on a hillside above the South shore of the Tulameen River, slightly West of where the Aerial Tramway was later located. If they had been able to stabilize the mine, there would have been no Blakeburn, and no Tramway. This was considered part of "Cardiff" in 1910. Photo courtesy Walt Smart. The BC. Coal and Coke Company reorganized in 1910 as Columbia Coal and Coke and their offices were at Granit...

A Short History

http://coalmont.mozey-on-inn.com/history.html

The original minesite was on the hillside overlooking the South side of the Tulameen River, a bit West of Coalmont, and part of the wooden abutment for the Upper Town Bridge still survives on the South shore of the Tulameen River, about a kilometre upstream of the present bridge. They were attempting to mine the coal from underneath, but the ground proved unstable, and the coal seams fractured. Wilson and Pat Burns. The old KVR railbed (sans rails) is now part of the well maintained Trans Canada Trail.

Coal and Rail

http://coalmont.mozey-on-inn.com/photos3.html

The Vancouver, Victoria and Eastern Railway (VV&E) arrived in Coalmont on November 10, 1911. This early photo shows the Coalmont Hotel, Cook's Store, both Livery Stables, McTavish's General Store, the Railway Station and Water Tower. Photo courtesy the Princeton Museum. The Water Tower was a GNR design, as was the Station behind it. The water tower was removed in 1943, and the Station burned in 1957. Well and Pump House in the foreground. Photo ca.1935 courtesy Dave Brown. All that remains of the Tipple ...

It is exactly 100 years since Coalmont came into being. We have been called a ghost town, and our closest communities, Granite Creek and Blakeburn, are long gone. But we're still here! The Canadian Census for 1911 reports 7 million people in the whole country, 50 people in Granite Creek, and 103 in Coalmont. Since then the national population has grown, Granite is uninhabited, and Coalmont still has a hundred people. Coalmont was advertised as. The Town of Opportunity. Please Sign The Guestbook.
