Cockenzie Boatyard - Cockenzie Future Archives

Cockenzie slip and boatyard , West Harbour. A large shed with a smaller one to the immediate W on the S side of the Harbour. Slipway to N. The history of the boatyard goes back to the 1940's where it was used to build Pontoons and to build Torpedo boats for the war. The Boatyard has produced fishing vessels and yachts. Today boat owners use the sheds to repair their boats. Sadly the boatyard is at risk of being demolished and replaced with houses and flats . Link to news article published 15 Dec 2011.

Cockenzie Harbour, East Lothian , Scotland. Firth of Forth. Looking out to Fife and the East Lothian coast. Cockenzie Harbour was first shaped as a Scottish Harbour in 1591 by James VI before this there had probably been a parish around the natural harbour line. After 1591 appropriate means of exporting coal that was buried around Tranent. It also contributed to the salt making in Prestonpans. The salt was extracted from the sea and heated in pans over coal fires. Create a free website.

The Tranent to Cockenzie Waggonway was the first railway in Scotland, opened in 1722. It was 2½ miles long and connected two towns in East Lothian, transporting coal from the pit heads at Tranent to Cockenzie Harbour via Meadowmill. Horse drawn wagons were used which held 2 tons of coal. On the return journey the horses would pull 5 empty wagons back to Tranent. Making around 3 round trips per day.
