About Cockleshell

Cockleshell was designed by Guernsey dentist Arthur Barber, known as AJ to all who knew him well. Although untrained as a naval architect AJ was a man with remarkable skills, and not only designed Cockleshell but also built her in his spare time. AJ Barber, Jonty Sherwill's maternal grandfather has been an inspiration to the following generations, with his love of life, talent for design and brilliant workmanship. 89 years of development. Cockleshell was amateur built but her designer and builder A.J. Barber was fastidious about technology. Much of her gear including 'tufnol' blocks he made himself and a set of wooden patterns for her cast bronze fittings still exists. It is believed that the boat has had four masts since her launch, the current alloy spars by Z Spars at Hadleigh in Suffolk was new in 1984. With the German invasion of Guernsey imminent, A.J. Barber evacuated to England with his wife Winnie and daughters Jocelyn and Patricia. By the time the first German troops entered the island on 30th June 1940 Cockleshell was already laid up on the harbour wall at St. Peter Port.
