What a first sight seems to be a clock with a missing hand and 12 hours dial continued by a second 24 hours round, is actually a tachometer. This Instrument used to measure engine revolutions per minute, has in it´s interior a clock. The propeller spin movement is transmitted to this instrument and the rotating movement charge the power spring power of the clock wich it has power reserve just for a several seconds, these is inside the the piece in the photo below. This is one of the last mechanical aircraft clock done. Lastest aviation clocks uses movement by Valjoux , the 551 (a chronograph clock named type 11) and Valjoux 555 (a chronograph with flyback function named Type 12). It was used by 4 brands Sinn, Breguet, Dodane and Mathey Tissot, and after this movement, the next generation built was battery operated and electronic cockpit clock. Wakmann established itself in New York as a several clock brand importer, the most famous one was Breitling, and they made some clocks with both brands like these. This clock called “radar shelter wall clock”, is exactly the same as the one aircraft built named 118-12-24. The only difference is that this one has two glass-attached hands to be able to fix the take off time. Model 618 12-24 records time of trip or elapsed time, was used in comercial planes.
