BFPG: Passing the baton - Matthew Brecknell

BFPG: Passing the baton. After a couple of great talks from Ben Kolera. I announced my retirement from the team that organises the Brisbane Functional Programming Group. I’ve had loads of fun helping organise BFPG, and I’m still enjoying it. So why quit? On a personal level, I do have a bunch of projects that need more focus. But that’s not the only reason. This decision is largely due to two excellent people who joined the team within the last year: Ben Kolera. For paying for a Vimeo Plus subscription, ...

Technical stuff sometimes about programming. Monday, July 15, 2013. Copying between two uploaders in CarrierWave. To copy between two cloud providers using CarrierWave and Fog is a bit tricky. Copying from one provider to a temporary file and then storing it in the other seems to work but the problem is that the file name is not preserved. If you wrap the temporary file in a SanitizedFile then Carrierwave will update the content without changing the name of the file. Tmp = File.new("/tmp/tmp", "wb").

Technical stuff sometimes about programming. Monday, December 13, 2004. REST of the world. How I explained REST to my wife. Ryan: Machines don't have a universal noun - that's why they suck. Every programming language, database, or other kind of system has a different way of talking about nouns. That's why the URL is so important. It let's all of these systems tell each other about each other's nouns. Wife: But when I'm looking at a web page, I don't think of it like that. Results of a Query. And my pape...

Technical stuff sometimes about programming. Tuesday, October 02, 2012. This is a reproduction of an article that appears in Compute's Gazzette, Issue 59. I'm reproducing it here because I think it's particularly good and on archive.org appears in formats where it's unlikely to be found again. Alternative link to his November's COMPUTE! Worlds Of Wonder - WOW! In this month's mailbag I received a letter from Art Oswald of Goshen, Indiana. Art was responding to my article in the November COMPUTE! We think...

Technical stuff sometimes about programming. Thursday, January 31, 2013. Removing Large Files from Git. The price of this is that sometimes you need to cleanup old binary files. Git makes this complicated but once you've found a couple of tools then it's relatively straightforward. Stackoverflow has a Perl and Ruby script that wraps around a few git commands to list all files in a repository that's above a certain file size " Find files in git repo over x megabytes, that don't exist in HEAD. And my paper...
