The Beginning

Codi was born at Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla, Missouri, at 9:09 am on December 4, 2002. She weighed 7 pounds 2 ounces and was 19 inches long. I thought she was absolutely perfect. Codi was a very loving child. Always giving hugs and kisses. She could and would steal anyone's heart just by batting her big blue eyes. Her blonde curls defied all attempts at brushing. There it is. The Revelation

Codi and her Aunt Katie. I am proud of myself because I was being the bigger person and giving her the benefit of the doubt and not automatically assume that she did, in fact, beat Codi. Im on the phone with daddy! I wanted to know what every tube, every syringe, every monitor was for. I wanted to know everything they were doing to her and why. What did that medicine to? How would it help her? And I LIKE it! 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Of course I didn't say that but I couldn't help but think that this line of questioning was absurd. After what seemed like an eternity, they let me out of the room and I saw my family: my mom, my stepdad, my son, and the guy I was seeing at the time, Darren. While I was in the room speaking with social services, Brian, his girlfriend, and her mother had arrived. The Call

February 2, 2005. February 2 was a cold snowy day so mom cancelled her appointment because she and I both know how people drive in St. Louis when it snows. We went to the grocery store and came home. We no more got home and the groceries in the house when the phone rang. It was my step dad calling from work. Brian had called him at work and told him that Codi was in the hospital. I got on the phone and my step dad told me what little he knew and gave me Brian's cell phone number.

A Little Heroine

I made the agonizing decision to donate her organs if she didn't come out of this. I thought that she would want to help save someone else's child's life. And I didn't want another family to go through the pain of losing a child. The doctor's pronounced her dead at 4:35 pm. Despite the fact that I knew in my heart that she was, hearing a doctor tell you that your daughter is dead, words cannot express the pain you feel. It's like; it's not official until a doctor tells you. Was the donor ever done drugs?
