Trees are very beneficial in todays world with all the timber products and the things that biproducts are used for, also,they inhale the carbon dioxide which we exhale and convert it into oxygen so that it is easier for us to breathe. I think that the most logical way to live would to have groups of pods conected by tubes all orbiting which ever planet they wanted. As for energy it would all be solar.
