Day 6: When They Grow Up and You Just Get Older. March 6, 2015. Of course when I hear of students from my first class heading off to college I start to feel old. Which is no comparison to teachers I’ve worked with who have taught a student and then that student’s child! My former students will have to grow up, face the harsh realities of adulthood some day. I’ve been there and done that. I may be getting older, but you can’t make me grow up. Slice of Life Challenge. Newer post →. March 6, 2015. My first ...

Monthly Archives: June 2015. Packing Up For The Last Time. June 16, 2015. Nine years. I dig slowly through the book bins, checking for beloved texts. Sometimes flipping through, sometimes putting them in my box, most times returning them to the bin. As the books tilt forward I see a sea of my name scrawled on the top of so many of them. Nine years left behind. The boxes I pack are few. What good will these items be in a basement? I hope you had the time of your life. Slice of Life Challenge 2016. I just ...

March 9, 2016. Car wash rinses the winter away. I watch as the thick brushes. Roll, pound, bounce, spray, scrub, slap. The windows-sides of the car. Lights flashing, sprayers spraying, blowers blowing. Dirt and salt obliterated from view. Sweet spring air greets gleaming windows. Tires dripping with new life, fresh roll. The world blinks it’s eye carefully,. Looks up tentatively with renewed soul. A seed of hope grows carefully. Into a flower, then blooms. Explodes! March 8, 2016. I read the story and th...

Newer posts →. August 25, 2015. I haven’t posted on this blog all summer. It’s been a busy one. We moved. Yikes! I started a new job. Minime #2 will be here in less than three weeks. Yikes again! To say things have been a bit of a roller coaster is an understatement. Not to mention…. Minime #1 got her big girl bed. Yikes! Minime #1 started a new daycare. Minime #1 still refuses to use the potty. Oh well. Oh and then there’s this…. And yet so many things stay the same. Packing Up For The Last Time. Nine y...

THE REAL VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY CONSISTS NOT IN SEEKING NEW LANDSCAPES BUT IN HAVING NEW EYES. - -MARCEL PROUST. Monday, April 29, 2013. How Do You Feel About Memoir? To begin this journey, it is best to dig into some mentor texts. Today, I am sharing four books that I enjoy using for mentor tests in this genre. Another book I like to use when teaching memoir is Childtimes. In the book My Life in Dog Years. Another favorite author, Gary Paulsen, shares his life but it now is using all the dogs in his life&#...

THE REAL VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY CONSISTS NOT IN SEEKING NEW LANDSCAPES BUT IN HAVING NEW EYES. - -MARCEL PROUST. Wednesday, February 27, 2013. Planning a Unit of Study. One of the things I enjoy most about working with teachers is the time spent in collaborating with them. Recently, I have had the chance to work closely with a couple teachers doing just that. One is a fifth grade teacher in my hometown and the other is my niece who lives in Utah and teaches sixth grade. Wednesday, February 20, 2013. Many se...

Notes from a teacher. Teaching off a cliff. Posted in Corner Classroom. I’m not a rock climber. Even if I weren’t afraid of heights I have no strength in my arms and hands, partly due to old injuries and new arthritis and partly because, well, you know, I was focused on building other strengths. But the image of rock climbing kept popping us as I thought about the start of this school year. What can we do better? Strategic absence ». Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. on losing faith | The Corner Classroom

https://thecornerclassroom.wordpress.com/2016/10/16/on-losing-faith

Notes from a teacher. Posted in Corner Classroom. Teaching is emotionally exhausting, not teaching is more so. My tears were from the feeling that I had not been able to teach that day, that week. Have you had those days? I wonder, because the teaching blogs I read never seem to mention difficult behaviors. Oh, maybe they mention the kid who doesn’t like to read and staunchly sticks to National Geographic’s. His motivation grew 3 sizes that day ». Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.

Classroom Library | The Corner Classroom

Notes from a teacher. Posted in Corner Classroom. As I was helping Harper locate a graphic novel to add to his book box, I kept fishing books out of boxes where they did not belong. In a nonfiction box reserved for books on energy? What was the problem? Didn’t we spread the books all over the classroom and look at them and think about what genre they were and decide which books belonged where together? No We didn’t. Not really. 2) We’ll learn about different genres. 3) I’ll keep the boxes of unshel...

his motivation grew 3 sizes that day | The Corner Classroom

https://thecornerclassroom.wordpress.com/2016/11/11/his-motivation-grew-3-sizes-that-day

Notes from a teacher. His motivation grew 3 sizes that day. Posted in Corner Classroom. It was always clear that the Grinch stole Christmas in an attempt to find something good for himself, even though he felt he didn’t deserve it. When he was able to see beauty, and then to participate in joy by saving the stolen presents, he heart, and his strength grew way out of proportion. Really, the strength of ten Grinches, plus two? It was a rhyme-satisfying exaggeration. His motivation grew three sizes that day.

THE REAL VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY CONSISTS NOT IN SEEKING NEW LANDSCAPES BUT IN HAVING NEW EYES. - -MARCEL PROUST. Wednesday, July 4, 2012. Happy 4th of July. Yes, we will do it again next year. After getting cleaned up from the race, we went to the Varsity for our usual after-race meal of a naked dog and fries for me and slaw dogs and fries for DD. Then we topped it all off with Georgia peach ice cream. We ended the day with a fun Braves game (against the Cubs). Happy 4th of July everyone! We started our day...

Wednesday, April 23, 2014. The moment you know you're a veteran mom. Wow Long time. I'm just not good at this blogging thing, I have to admit. It's not for me. So, I post VERY infrequently. I could never make this my "job." I'd fail miserably. I'd fire me. Anyway, I was reading another blog today where a mother (just had her first about 4 months ago) was talking about how she has yet to have her first horrifying moment with her son.
