Cog Sigh: January 2007
http://cogsigh.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html
A few thoughts on thinking. Wednesday, January 31, 2007. At one time or other we've all been cornered by a conman. Some friendly stranger on the street strikes up a conversation at the stoplight and next thing you know he's asking for $50 to help an impoverished architect and his family flee from some underdeveloped African nation. You and I both know that there is no real African family in the picture, but it is still hard for us to get away. How can a stranger engage our time and sympathies so quickly?

Cog Sigh: April 2007

A few thoughts on thinking. Sunday, April 22, 2007. Turning Our Words into Actions. Linguists have been trying to map language (and all it's cognitive aspects) in the brain. We now know (generally) where speech is produced, where grammar comes into the picture, where written language is decoded, etc. The short answer is 'no'. Most studies of this nature (trying to localize word meaning in the brain) have focused on concrete, visual nouns. In a study by Hauk. Machine. Turns out that the (non-language-...

Insights into self and happiness. Wednesday, April 4, 2007. What is the difference between a day when joy grabs you by the lapels and head butts you into giddy gladness and days when you're inclined to turn off the phone and go fetal? It might be your choice of recreational drug. Or, it might be the difference between living in possibility and living in expectation. What are the odds that our expectations of life will ever be as amazing as life? Posted by Ron Davison. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Insights into self and happiness. Wednesday, January 31, 2007. Fame, Fortune, and Tom Waits. I was sitting at the lunch counter of a local institution last week when a guy named Don struck up a conversation with me. From Don I learned that I graduated from the same high school as Don and his buddy, singer / songwriter Tom Waits. As I thought about it, I wondered what any teacher at Hilltop could have taught Tom about his future. He has created a fairly unique sound and although he has some obvious in...
Revolution You: Mood-Led Thinking
http://revolution-you.blogspot.com/2008/10/mood-led-thinking.html
Insights into self and happiness. Friday, October 17, 2008. Too often, we think that we've thought objectively about a situation and then, because of the conclusion we reach, our emotions are either positive or negative. It's not obvious that this is the direction that causation flows. When you are in a negative space, when you are feeling bad, you are likely to reach conclusions that justify this feeling. Emotions often lead our thinking to conclusions that sustain them. Posted by Ron Davison.

Revolution You: Heroes & Individuals
http://revolution-you.blogspot.com/2007/06/heroes-individuals.html
Insights into self and happiness. Saturday, June 2, 2007. I asked myself 'What is the myth you are living? And found that I did not know. So . I took it upon myself to get to know 'my' myth and I regarded this as the task of tasks . I simply had to know what unconscious or preconscious myth was forming me.". Charles Tart makes the point that a hypnotist, in a matter of minutes, can program you to do things. How much more powerfully can society program you during the course of your life?

Insights into self and happiness. Friday, December 28, 2007. The Argument Against Living Your Life Fully. 8220;The purpose of life is to fart around. Don’t let anyone tell you different.”. We've embraced the notion of living a full life. Well, at least in public. I'm working 24-7, we brag to anyone who will listen. And of course, this is a lie and that is just one of the things wrong with the whole notion of living life fully. For one thing, post-peak order is the opposite of post-traumatic disorder....
