Running Towards Stillness: April 2009
http://carrytiger.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
Searching for Bliss in Work, Family and Love. Saturday, April 11, 2009. Surfing near Tofino, Vancouver Island). Jenn and I are novice surfers but already can taste the hint of perfection that comes when we are able to stand atop a wave and experience how the ocean feels as it moves across the skin of the earth. Father and sons, Varkala, India). I don’t know the significance. I’ve read that in the sacred waters of the Arabian Sea Hindu’s can plead for salvation for the souls of their...The waves break aga...

Running Towards Stillness: Harnessing the Third Coincidence
http://carrytiger.blogspot.com/2009/10/harnessing-third-coincidence.html
Searching for Bliss in Work, Family and Love. Sunday, October 11, 2009. Harnessing the Third Coincidence. My hope was that a meeting with a prominent Canadian literary agent in Toronto in August would round out the trio, land me a fat writing contract, and set me on a course for literary stardom, or at least literary self-sufficiency. The protagonist in my books The Cardinal Divide. And the forthcoming Darkening Archipelago. I think it was on my second Green River adventure that one of the boys started r...

Running Towards Stillness: June 2009
http://carrytiger.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
Searching for Bliss in Work, Family and Love. Saturday, June 27, 2009. The Electric Current of Spirit. It’s been more than three months since Jenn and I returned from India. Its time to say goodbye. Its time to move onto other topics, but not before exploring a few additional ideas. I’d be remiss if I didn’t return to the topic of traffic, or more aptly, transportation. And I can’t leave unexplored the electric current of spirit that prevails in India. We traveled by plane, train, bus, cab, hired car, bo...

Running Towards Stillness: May 2008
http://carrytiger.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html
Searching for Bliss in Work, Family and Love. Tuesday, May 20, 2008. 8220;We call the time we spend doing productive; but it is the time when we are not doing that gives birth to our best ideas”. Tao te Ching, 11. After running the Royal Roads Gutbuster on April 6. Part of the impetus for this hiatus was fatigue, and part of it was logistical. My life has become very full, and I’m having trouble keeping up my running schedule. And I’m focusing on my family: on being a good, loving father, and a goo...

Running Towards Stillness: Holiday Shopping with the Buddha Claus
http://carrytiger.blogspot.com/2009/12/holiday-shopping-with-buddha-claus.html
Searching for Bliss in Work, Family and Love. Thursday, December 24, 2009. Holiday Shopping with the Buddha Claus. The Buddha that sits in my entrance way has a tiny Santa hat perched jauntily on his head; set at a rakish angle, it juxtaposes perfectly against Gautama Buddha’s serine expression. This year I went in search also of the Buddha Claus. Clutched in their sticky fingers. Maybe the Buddha Claus isn’t for everybody. As I’ve said before, the purpose in all my running and my stillness isnR...

Running Towards Stillness: August 2008
http://carrytiger.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
Searching for Bliss in Work, Family and Love. Saturday, August 16, 2008. S ometimes I’m foolish enough to believe that my ears are located on the sides of my head. You know them: the little dangly, fleshy bits that look like they’ve been moulded by a three-year-old playing with modelling clay that has dried before anybody could put the finishing touches on it. 8220;That sound pressure. In the inner ear. The inner ear is hollow, embedded in the temporal bone. The microscopic "hairs" of these cells are str...

Running Towards Stillness: September 2009
http://carrytiger.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Searching for Bliss in Work, Family and Love. Saturday, September 12, 2009. It occurred to me for the first time the other day that I am already home. For more than twenty years I’ve believed that someday I would reach the apex of the spiritual journey – Nirvana, enlightenment – and that I would find myself…well, somewhere, free from worldly suffering. I would arrive at the journey’s end, like a road weary traveler, grateful to be finally home. If pressed I would say that what I am seeking is peace.

Running Towards Stillness: September 2008

Searching for Bliss in Work, Family and Love. Wednesday, September 17, 2008. Big as the Sky. The boys and I watch an episode of Avatar, and we snuggle on the couch and Silas, in his casual way tells me “You’re a great Dad, Steph,” the way you might say, “You’re a great fruit, Banana.”. I tried to explain to Rio once that space has no beginning and no end, fighting my own impulse to question what, exactly, is on the other side of the end of the universe as it expands at the speed of light? I call Jenn and...
