The Coleus Society

Monday, October 6, 2008. First, a big thank-you goes to Dale Griep for the title of this post. Dale recently started a thread on Dave’s Garden (you know, the big online garden-chat site) about sports that had popped up this season, and since then the thread has attracted comments from respondents in at least three countries! I thought I’d post a few sports here. More will follow anon, once I find some of my older pictures on the CDs that hold my digital files from the past couple of years. I need to get ...

The Coleus Society: August 2008

http://coleussociety.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, August 27, 2008. Return to the Frelinghuysen. Remember: picture first, then words. A few Lantana flower clusters peek out from a mass of 'Freckles', with a bamboo providing a clean green backdrop. Sharp! Here's what Pam Harper calls a color echo: the pink of 'The Flume' picking up on the flowers of a Fuchsia magellanica selection. Cool and very sophisticated, I think. Foliage of 'Merlin's Magic'. Can you imagine how this would look if the red-violet were paired with white on the coleus foliage...

The Coleus Society: September 2007

http://coleussociety.blogspot.com/2007_09_01_archive.html

Tuesday, September 11, 2007. A Coleus Paradise in New Jersey. This past Saturday, Graeme Hardie welcomed several hundred visitors into his exquisite suburban garden, one that offers exuberance, thoughtful design, and a wide range of plants, including a masterly palette of coleus. On the far side of the garden, another blue wall interacts dramatically with coleus and other container-grown plants. ‘Alabama Sunset’ on the left flows into a mass of ‘Purple Haze’, with Setcreasea p...Offering tongues of contr...

The Coleus Society: July 2007

http://coleussociety.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, July 25, 2007. While knocking around in one of the gardens at Atlock Farm a few weeks ago, I spotted a tiny but colorful plant and immediately went over for a closer look. To my surprise, it was an infant coleus. While volunteer coleus may be commonplace in areas with warmer winters, in central Jersey it’s quite rare for me to spot one coming up from a seed that most likely spent the winter outside. But I have hope. Something special could be in the works here. Posted by Cie Stroud. But in thi...

The Coleus Society: September 2008

http://coleussociety.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 26, 2008. Two weeks ago tonight, the Atlock Farm crew was wondering if the clouds and rain would banish themselves – and they did. A rainless, though quite humid, Coleus Day on September 13 brought out a couple of hundred attendees. Here are some pictures of the happy crowd who helped make the day a big success. Ken Selody, owner of Atlock Farm, “rang up” quite a few enthusiastic customers. Greenhouse #60 showcased about 120 different, photo-worthy coleus that drew the crowds in. Sorry ...

Monday, July 28, 2008. Chanticleer - a pleasure garden. Without a doubt, Chanticleer Garden. Is the finest public garden I have ever roamed. How fortunate that I live only 20 minutes away and can frequently savor their inspired horticultural displays. Chanticleer was on the Perennial Plant Symposium. Thanks for the good press, Kevin! Thursday, October 30, 2008. Someone out to get the passionate gardening vote knew that plant graffiti would be hard for any chlorophyll lover to miss. This scrawled message was spotted at the North Carolina Botanical Garden. In Chapel Hill in one of their Habitat Collections - three small but deliciously designed gardens representing the diverse geographic regions of NC. Links to this post. Sunday, October 19, 2008. little green pixels: Spring Collaborations

http://littlegreenpixels.blogspot.com/2009/03/spring-collaborations.html

Monday, March 30, 2009. Even when I'm on my own, shooting a garden is a collaborative act between the garden's creator and myself. A good designer has already established visual relationships and plant combinations that I must then translate and enhance through the lens. But when there's time and resources to bring in talented Art Directors, Photography Editors, Stylists and Producers, the results are often exceptional. Here are a few recently published examples:. Produced and styled by Jon Carloftis.

http://littlegreenpixels.blogspot.com/2009/06/beautifully-useful.html

Sunday, June 21, 2009. My favorite reference books are both practical and attractive. Whether it's a guide book, a manual or a monograph, I can find what I need quickly and then enjoy the scenery and side trips if I have the time. It's all about good informational design and The Perennial Care Manual. Has it in spades. My first copy just arrived from Storey. I am glad to see that you teamed up with Nan again! Fallscaping was one of my favorite books - your pictures were hauntingly beautiful and Nans writ...
