Postcards from Sussex

Saturday, 17 March 2018. Tudor groats and a bag seal. Last Sunday on a club dig I was fortunate to find two Tudor groats, the second time I have found two hammered coins in one day. Both are very worn as is usual with coins of this period. In addition they have suffered from plough damage. They are both about 25mm in diameter. Groats were worth 4 pence. The first coin is a Mary groat. MARIA D G ANG FRA Z HIB REGI. Mary, by the Grace of God, Queen of England, France and Ireland. Philip and Mary groat.

Postcards from Sussex: Steve has plenty of bottle

http://colinknight.blogspot.com/2011/01/steve-has-plenty-of-bottle.html

Saturday, 15 January 2011. Steve has plenty of bottle. At our club meeting on Wednesday we were treated to a fascinating talk by Steve Homewood, an expert on bottles. He started in 2000 when he lived in Lewes and the river flooded. Bottles were flushed and dumped by the flood and Steve investigated and began his passion. He was based in. For some time and has found and collected bottles from all over. Including some unique and rare examples. He now lives on the Isle of Bute, and commutes regularly to.

Sue Knight's Blog: The Walnut Tree

http://sueknight2000.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-walnut-tree.html

Saturday, 8 August 2015. Walnut Tree, Juglans regia. Bob, Judy, the Captain and me had a day out at Bosham Harbour on Wednesday. The tide was way out when we arrived, and had surged back with a vengeance after lunch (in The Blue Anchor, Bob's treat, very nice too). People were beginning to move their cars out of the way. It is a village with very high thresholds. Jackie joined us for supper - lasagne (Cooks), salad, garlic bread, and ice-cream. And our visitors left on Thursday morning. Anne of the Cape.

Friday, 31 October 2014. Circuit Overseer Talk: REJOICE WITH THE TRUTH. This is re-created from the notes I took during the Circuit Overseer's talk on Tuesday night. I couldn't get it all down, or read back all my scrawled notes, so while this is not perfect, I hope it is accurate. REJOICE WITH THE TRUTH. Circuit Overseer Talk, Tuesday 28th October 2014. Scientists, for example, are constantly searching for the answers. Do we remember how we felt when we first learnt the truth? The Circuit Overseer point...

Misidentifying Fungi: Horton Wood on a dry December day

http://misidentifyingfungi.blogspot.com/2016/12/horton-wood-on-dry-december-day.html

I don't know much about Fungi. What I do know is, they're mostly pretty hard to identify to species. So this is me, trying. Saturday, 3 December 2016. Horton Wood on a dry December day. Quick stroll to Horton Wood this morning. Wasn't expecting much in the way of fungi, as I gather the season starts winding down at this time of year. But there were a few things about. I took a specimen of the mushroom in the foreground of the second picture. Here's the cap up close:. Cap dry and mousy brown. Yellow-brown...

I don't know much about Fungi. What I do know is, they're mostly pretty hard to identify to species. So this is me, trying. Monday, 4 April 2016. Something in the flowerbed. Something caught my eye as I walked up the garden path this evening. Something in this flowerbed:. This cup fungus has sprung up all along the length of the bed:. Outer surface, but forms a separate layer with a slightly smoother texture. It doesn't have much of a stem to speak of. To 8cm across; initially deep cup- or goldfish bowl-...

Sue Knight's Blog: What are we most looking forward to in the restored earthly Paradise?

http://sueknight2000.blogspot.com/2015/08/what-are-we-most-looking-forward-to-in.html

Tuesday, 11 August 2015. What are we most looking forward to in the restored earthly Paradise? That was one of the questions we thought about at the end of our Watchtower study on Sunday. And I think, first and foremost for most of us, it was the resurrection, or the re-creation, when those we love are woken from the dreamless sleep of death. And it will also be wonderful to be alive again. All of us are dying from the moment we are born, so do we really know what its like to be alive? Anne of the Cape.

Monday, 31 August 2015. The Day Draws Closer. The dreaded day of the operation approaches fast. I don't think I'm going to able to cope with it, and I'm not even having it this time. I didn't even know they had a dog. I hope there was some magazine left by the time they got home. Jackie cheered us up by coming for supper on Saturday - some curries: some made by Cooks, and some made by me. Its grey and rainy today - the weather being in harmony with the way we are feeling. Friday, 28 August 2015. Anyway -...

Sue Knight's Blog: November 2014

http://sueknight2000.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Friday, 28 November 2014. It was a sunset and a half last night. Jehovah is the Grand Creator indeed! This week I have been re-reading Barbara Pym's "A Few Green Leaves", and "An Unsuitable Attachment". They get better and funnier on every reading and I shall try to find a couple of quotes to give a taster before the end of my blog. Of course, we may not need fiction then. I don't know. But it will be paradise. And that is all we need to know for the moment. Here is a taste:. The nuances of the English c...

We treated Pen to lunch in the Castle dining rooms, which are all they should be. A competent lasagne with salad for us girls, a chicken pie for The Captain, and we shared a piece of carrot cake afterwards. Sad to see Pen go, but lovely to have seen her, and we all hope to get together for a writing day 'oop North this summer. Monday, 27 April 2015. Friday, 24 April 2015.
