THEORY NOW: December 2014
https://theorynow.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
December 3, 2014. Today the soul, the gut, the frisson. Of Rock 'n’ Roll died; Bobby Keys has passed at 70. What does this mean? Recalling “Brown Sugar,”. With Mick’s voice and that lyric-range of misogyny to addiction to rage, and back again, through ennui, melancholy and loss, those long-ago words don't punch as mean as that Bobby Keys’ sax solo, dropping a blistering hot-wax that peppers down “Brown Sugar” with the spice and swagger Mick barely registers. 8220;Hell, yeah, there was some pot around!
THEORY NOW: History of Painting 2
https://theorynow.blogspot.com/2015/04/history-of-painting-2.html
April 13, 2015. History of Painting 2. The evolution of art from a depiction of life to a conveyance of idea was accomplished first in “proto-writing.” Pictograms evoked the idea of the thing by reproducing the thing, abstractly and ever more reductively. The discovery of ancient Vinca symbols, unearthed in Romania in 1875, further document that proto-writing came about 1500 years before historians believe cuneiform was invented by the Sumerians around 3000 B.C.E. January 14, 2015. January 11, 2015. To [Art School Name Deleted], Office of Admissions:. X was a former student of mine in two of my art theory courses at the Corcoran, Art as Social Practice. In Fall 2013 and Postconceptualism. Critique and his piece was a highlight of the 2014 “NEXT”. Exhibition at Corcoran Gallery. Later that same year, I was able to curate one of X's works into my Readymade@100. Show at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center. And how he uses it. To read such thought...
THEORY NOW: R.I.P. Chris Burden
https://theorynow.blogspot.com/2015/05/rip-chris-burden.html
May 11, 2015. Chris Burden, a pioneering body artist, provocateur, sculptor, shaman, professor and postconceptualist, died yesterday in Topanga Canyon, California. He was 69. I love Burden's work; it had transgression, progression and passion always. I taught his theories for 20 years, how he changed performance and sculpture forever. I have posted often about him and here's a selection:. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. 101 Conceptual Art Ideas. What Makes Good Art.

April 29, 2015. Watching Us Watching: Social Practice Endgame. A stand of metal bleachers, devoid of ornament or fanfare, occupy one of the Corcoran Museum’s galleries, not facing “out” at us viewers but aimed at an empty wall. October 10, 2014. And not to forget…Objet trouvé (Part 6). An object that may have indeterminate function, origin and/or conscious recognition for us but is “irreplaceable” for the one who found it. Produces 22 million hits but a quick glance at MOMA’s site reveals: “With the exception of the Ready-made, in which a manufactured object is generally presented on its own without mediation, the objet trouvé is most often used as raw material in an assemblage with juxtaposition. 2012; steel; 18x18x11 inches;.

THEORY NOW: May 2014

May 28, 2014. In about two weeks the open call for submissions of “new readymades” for our “Readymade@100”. My recent research visit to the Norton Simon Museum yielded a bounty of valuable background and information on the museum’s 1963 Duchamp retrospective, “by or of Marcel Duchamp or Rrose Selavy,”. 2) that has only reinforced my original intentions for this exhibition: to approach the continued relevance and influence of the readymade as "a teachable moment.". 1915-1923) to a Fountain. The necessity ...
THEORY NOW: February 2015
https://theorynow.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
February 26, 2015. History of Painting 1. The History of Art is said to begin with Lascaux and cave paintings, of which human hands figure prominently. Thus, from the beginning, writing functioned as assertion: “I am here now.”. Primitive cave dwellers also depicted bison and other Paleolithic creatures. We can surmise then that they perceived themselves and the Other equal in importance. Link to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). History of Painting 1. View my complete profile. THEORY NOW: Mining the Vain
https://theorynow.blogspot.com/2008/10/mining-vain.html
October 27, 2008. In the late 1970’s, artists began to investigate the institutional validation of art by art museums and galleries. The investigational methods used by these artists included appropriation and “site specific” installation that raised questions about both site-specificity itself and the historical imperative of museum practice.(1). Certainly it is always beneficial for solid art museums to acknowledge conceptual art and, although a safe exhibition bet in ’08, the relationship of Cal...

Colin Blog-heed [title pending]. Saturday, 31 May 2014. Saturday Morning Cartoons - Blanc Cheques. He was "The Man Of A Thousand Voices". Mel Blanc, who would've turned 106 years old yesterday, manipulated the pipes behind the most popular cartoon characters ever made - Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety, Barney Rubble, Mr. Spacely. That was only 6 of them. Can you name the other 994? That probably falls into the 300-400 range. But what about the 900's and above? Which was hastily created in 1978-...
