Further ramblings...: Lake Balaton - Arrival and Day One

http://colinsrunning.blogspot.com/2015/03/lake-balaton-arrival-and-day-one.html

Thursday, 26 March 2015. Lake Balaton - Arrival and Day One. With such regularly spaced checkpoints I would be carrying very little, a camera, the 'bin liner' OMM windproof that I took across the desert, a packet of Shot-Bloks and a few painkillers. these all fitted in a waist belt so no need for the hydration vest or a rucksack. After a slightly poorly attended warm-up we gathered on the path along the side of the lake and pretty much spot on eleven we were off. However due to the narrow nature of t...

Further ramblings...: October 2014

http://colinsrunning.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 28 October 2014. October has been a busy month for me running wise. After the Saltmarsh 75 - the subject of my previous two entries - I had two weeks until the Chelmsford Marathon followed by the Stort 30 a week later. It's the latter event that forms the subject of this blog - although if you've read the title you will suspect that to be the case already. The Stort 30 is another event in the calendar of Challenge Running ( www.challenge-running.co.uk. Despite rain earlier in the week the path b...

Further ramblings...: The Druid Challenge - Day Two

http://colinsrunning.blogspot.com/2014/11/the-druid-challenge-day-two.html

Saturday, 15 November 2014. The Druid Challenge - Day Two. So Day One didn't go as well as I would have liked but it was time to forget that and try and have a good Day Two. I felt OK in the morning, even better after a couple of Weetabix and so was prepared to get out there and go for it. What a difference a day makes. 24 hours previously I was just hoping to survive Druids and not DNF. Now I was re-energised and planning a really storming finish. Was this going to happen or would I lapse in...Watermark...

Further ramblings...: July 2014

http://colinsrunning.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 15 July 2014. The Long Distance Walkers Association had decided that Essex needed a route going 'up and down' Essex to complement those crossing it and the 70 mile Saffron Trail was born. It runs from Southend to Saffron Walden, via Chelmsford and is intended to represent a theoretical route that may have been used by the 16th and 17th century spice trade to take spice from Saffron Walden to the coast. This formed the basis for the route of our run. Could hear the odd rumble of thunder. I really...

Further ramblings...: February 2015

http://colinsrunning.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 3 February 2015. Anyway the reason for this blog entry isn't to cast further doubt on my sanity but to report on my first event of 2015 - which in itself brings my sanity into doubt. Better value than that. Anyway shortly before 9 we all went out into the carpark for a pre-race briefing after which Katie - Ian's daughter - counted us down and we were off! It was at Woodham Mortimer I started running with Pete, a much quicker runner than me who had twisted his ankle earlier and so was down to my ...

Colin's ramblings about a desert ramble. An insight into my (still deranged) mind as I prepare for the 2016 Marathon des Sables. Tuesday, 29 April 2014. The Marathon Des Sables - Days Four and Five. With all plans in place that just left the relatively trivial exercise of running 80kms…. Despite now knowing the start routine I was as nervous at the start as I had been on Day One. We were due to start at 9 today rather than 8:30 so at 9:08 we set off. D book. This defence has to be tempered with the a...

So what went right in the 2016 MDS? If I could only use one word to describe the MDS it woud be 'big'. I know that's not very imaginative and from the previous blog entries you would probably have expected me to go for 'sand' but I'll explain. Then there is the desert itself. Before I go any further with this blog entry I will apologise in advance if its even less coherent than usual. Hopefully you will understand that with barely a week to go until I fly to Morocco I'm a bit preoccupied at the moment! So what is there to tell about Fuerteventura? Colin's ramblings about a desert ramble. An insight into my (still deranged) mind as I prepare for the 2016 Marathon des Sables. Tuesday, 3 May 2016. MDS 2016 - Day Two. Anyway on to Day Two. Day Two had a fair amount of sand but we had already realised that sand was going to figure more prominently than usual in the 2016 MDS so that wasn't a surprise, however the road book suggested there was a fair amount of terrain that should be quite runnable. Colin's ramblings about a desert ramble. An insight into my (still deranged) mind as I prepare for the 2016 Marathon des Sables. Tuesday, 21 January 2014. The big day is getting ever closer, just over ten weeks until we fly out, spend a day standing in queues (the one part of the event the British always come first in) and then start our cruel and unusual punishment, sorry, I mean the 2014 MdS of course. So how did I get on? Well much better than I thought I would! As my loyal followers will know the nex...

We seemed well matched in pace and he also seemed to have an endless supply of glucose tablets which he kindly shared with me. At least that was what he told me they were - they certainly kept me moving. Fortunately the organisers had put plenty of signs out and so I was able to finish strongly in 6 hours 46 minutes an...
